Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
From My Favorite Martian to Mork & Mindy, the aliens-on-Earth concept enjoyed a rich and, some might say, exhausted TV legacy by the mid-‘90s. Yet, former Saturday Night Live writers Bonnie and Terry Turner found ways to freshen tired extraterrestrial tropes with 3rd Rock from the Sun, the husband-and-wife duo’s first hit they later created That '70s Show. 3rd Rock depicted the adventures of four aliens on a field trip to Earth, where they’re researching the human condition. To more easily assimilate into the culture, the group takes on the guises of a human family. The High Commander is now father figure Dick Solomon John Lithgow, a professor at the local university; his first lieutenant has changed into a human female, Sally, Kirsten Johnson; the oldest member of the group is now the teenage Tommy Joseph Gordon-Levitt; and the weirdest alien of them all has become the equally weird human Harry French Stewart. Upsetting the short-term mission is Dick's new human love interest, fellow professor Dr. Mary Albright Jane Curtin, causing the aliens to stay on Earth indefinitely. Witty dialogue and clever plotlines highlight the fish-out-of-water experience of the aliens, who must come to terms with such things as love, dating, the common cold, and the confusing aspects of CD club membership. Highlights from 1996's Season 1 episodes include: "Selfish Dick," in which the Solomons become addicted to TV; "Dick's First Birthday," in which the Solomons decide their High Commander is getting old; and "The Art of Dick," wherein Sally uses her alien military training to take on the school bake sale. John Lithgow won the first of three Emmy Awards Best Actor in a Comedy Series for this 20-episode 1996 run, an unusual feat for a show that only debuted in midseason January 9, 1996.

The goof that is 3rd Rock!

Finally this modern classic is gonna be out on DVD! Even though I have seen them all, it is refreshing to have them on DVD so that I don't have to depend on the TV company to air it according to a reasonable schedule. With a TV show like this one, you need to have it all on DVD so that you can watch it on demand. Buy this DVD from Barnes and Noble online!

    funniest ever

3rd rock is probably the cleverest and funniest show ever. Most sitcoms look at the inside of life from the inside. 3rd rock looks at it from the outside, the only vantage point from which can be seen the silliness and tenderness of it all. It's a great blend of thoughtful humor and slapstick, fantasy and reality. What makes it work is the pure innocence of the aliens faced with learning about a world of craziness that we call American culture. The cast was meticulously chosen and includes the funniest and most talented actors in the business. I can't wait for the rest of the series to be issued. Watching this series is like taking a vacation. It's fresh, warm and sunny.
