Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Created by Brenda Hampton (Mad About You) and executive-produced by the godfather of TV glitz, Aaron Spelling, 7th Heaven is the gem in the WB's dramatic crown. One of the WB shows that garners consistently high ratings with kids and young adults -- despite its more wholesome content -- 7th Heaven revolves around the trials and tribulations of the Camden family: a minister, Eric (Stephen Collins); his wife, Annie (Catherine Hicks); teenage son, Matt (Barry Watson); teen daughters, Mary (Jessica Biel) and Lucy (Beverley Mitchell); preteen children, Simon (David Gallagher) and Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman); and Happy, the family dog. Although it's never quite clear what denomination the Reverend Camden represents, this family drama makes a point of focusing more on the love, trust, and honesty shared among family members than on specific religious issues. The series doesn't shy away from controversial topics, tackling such subjects as homelessness, premarital sex, hate crimes, and school violence. While these issues generally don't affect the Camden household directly, the series is able to explore these important topics through friends of the Camden kids. The premiere episode, "Anything You Want" introduces the Camden clan and also deals with a common teenage problem when Matt picks up the habit of smoking. Annie's mother, Jenny, is dying of leukemia, and "In the Blink of an Eye" centers on her last days. The Camdens learn that a family friend's church was burned down by a racist group in "The Color of God," while "Saturday" finds the Rev. Camden counseling a young boy about his drug habit. The always-welcome Peter Graves guest-stars with Barbara Rush as Eric's overbearing parents in "Seven Is Enough." Although the series can sometimes get a little preachy when dealing with wrongdoing, 7th Heaven has captured the hearts of audiences with its intelligent writing and believable characters, offering fans a safe haven for family viewing.

If family values, lessons, and comedic acting are areas in which you love, then you will want to buy 7th Heaven ¿ The Complete First Season. Reverend Eric and his wife, Annie, teach their five children (Matt, Mary, Lucy, Simon, and Ruthie) God¿s values and right from wrong. The Camden family is not an average American family but does have characteristics that the typical American person possesses. I can relate to Eric and Annie¿s teenage daughters, Mary and Lucy, because they make mistakes and have good heads on their shoulders. I can also space out and ignore anything uninteresting that is around me. In today¿s society, a close family is very rare. While watching 7th Heaven, you can escape into a world that is relaxing and humorous. I enjoyed the Camdens¿ casualness because they can speak to their family members and show the viewers that they can also speak with their own family about their life and what is going on in it.

This show is perfect for the family because it explains the teenage problems without the actual parents having to give a lecture. Like when they did the episode on teen sex and being a cutter.

7th Heaven is a great inspirational TV show and it's really addicting. Whenever I watch this show, I can never stop. It would be great if it was put back on ABC family, just until I have enough time to save up for the season 2 and up! You just cannot get enough of the Camdens!

The storyline is often deep and inspirational and makes you want to be a better person. It is a wholesome and rich look at what life has to offer when you give to life. I am sorry the show is no longer on television, but I am glad to be able to buy the DVD's. It was certainly well done!

I like buying T.V. shows that I like...because T.V. shows are awesome. This is my FAVORITE show of all time. I mean what's there not to like about it. It's funny, sad, laughable, and you can pretty much relate to one of the characters and the situation that they're going through, and that's what is so cool about the show. AWESOME!
