Jimmy Smith Eminem, known to his friends as Rabbit, is a young man trying to make his way out of the burned-out shell of inner-city Detroit. Rabbit's entire life has been a hard climb, and it certainly hasn't gotten any easier lately; Rabbit has just been dumped by his girlfriend, forcing him to move back in with his emotionally unstable mother, Stephanie Kim Basinger, and he's getting along especially poorly with Stephanie's new boyfriend. Rabbit has a factory job that's tough, demeaning, and doesn't pay especially well, and he's convinced his skills as a rapper are his only real hope at a better life. Rabbit makes music with a crew of DJ's and MC's who call themselves Three One Third, among them his close friend Future Mekhi Phifer, but his status as a white kid making music in a predominantly African-American community and culture is extremely intimidating, and after Rabbit freezes up in the midst of an MC battle, he's convinced he's missed his chance and that he's doomed to lead a marginal life as a factory rat for the rest of his days. With the help of his friends, and his new girlfriend Alex Brittany Murphy, Rabbit struggles to work up the courage and the confidence to take one more shot at making his dream a reality. 8 Mile was shot on location in Detroit; the name refers to 8 Mile Road, a thoroughfare along the city's perimeter which effectively separates the middle-class suburban neighborhoods from the lower-class inner-city.

The hip-hop generation gets its Saturday Night Fever with 8 Mile, director Curtis Hanson's searing, grimy look at the world of freestyle rap in mid-'90s Detroit and its most notorious progeny, Eminem -- or, more specifically, a rapper nicknamed Rabbit who happens to bear an uncanny similarity to the controversial superstar. The film seems tailor-made to deflect criticism of the media-hungry artist: The man otherwise known as Marshall Mathers is portrayed as a hard worker, doting big brother, and even friend to ostracized gay co-workers. And yet 8 Mile is no puff piece. Eminem's character is also hotheaded, insular, and, with his gray skull cap and headphones perpetually glued to his head, more than a little nerdy. Hanson and writer Scott Silver have managed to create such a vivid milieu, time period, and bank of supporting characters, a first-time actor can't help but succeed, and Eminem acquits himself well -- there isn't a moment when he's grandstanding or playing to the camera. Predictably, the women who orbit Rabbit's life -- including a defiantly cast but strangely appropriate Kim Basinger and an irresistibly tarty Brittany Murphy -- don't fare as well in the scheme of the plot, but they're at least understandably, three-dimensionally pathetic and/or two-timing.     A Must See Film!!

    I give the 2002 movie, 8 Mile a rating of five out of five stars hands down. This rated R, autobiographical film is filled with eye catching drama and interesting, influential music. 8 Mile provides its audience with the most descriptive and expressive scenery so that you actually feel as if you were in the movie with Eminem, feeling the emotions he felt during each scene. The movie 8 Mile takes place in the 8 Mile area of Detroit. With no money and very little clothes, Jimmy refuses to live like this and raise his daughters the way he was raised. His only option is to continue to work hard and use his talent and creativity to get what he desires (which is a better lifestyle); that outstanding ability being his ability to rap. Unto his surprise this task was not as simple as he contemplated. It was far more difficult for Mr. Jimmy Smith by him being the only white rapper trying to influence a group of hundreds of predominately African Americans to choose him over the other MCs. In addition, Jimmy has to do everything on his own without the help from his mother, which is the only family he has. With his mother's trailer as his only place to live, he gets thrown out and left on the streets by himself. Jimmy Smith went from being lonely, poor, homeless and looked down upon to well respected and popular. Watch how rapper, Eminem portrays his life story of overcoming numerous challenges, distinguishing who his real friends are from the ones that didn't really care about him, and having no family at all to go to for support in this musically dramatic film.

    The true story of Marshal Matters 8 Mile is a great movie it's a drama a really cool movie and Eminem is so hot in this movie he's really a cool guy 8 Mile rules!

    VERY ENTERTAINING

    I had no respect for rap before I saw this movie, but after seeing this movie I came to apprectiate it. This movie was funny and very entertaining. I certainly underestimated Eminem as an actor, he did a very respectable job in this movie.

    Better then I thought

    Before I saw this movie, I hated rap. I thought it was a waste of time. And now, Eminem is like my favorite artist! But I especially loved the scenes he did with Chloe Greenfeild, his sister. I loved these scenes because it shows that what we see Eminem do on stage is different then his real life. That he's actually sensitive, not just a street thug. And I love the song 'Lose Yourself' It makes the most important point I think a song ever made. I think anyone and everyone should see this movie, it will help you see in a different light.

    Yo Yo Yo, Get in this kool-aid!

    Yo, where to begin, my minds racin. I cant wait to put this DvD in i'm pacin. A wannbe rapper tryin to make his breaks. This movies so tough i dont know how much I can take. Marshall, so awesome and true, anyone that hates this be actin a fool. Just go out and buy it on the double. Or just click up top and get it from the B and Noble. Totally deservin the 5 stars it got. Better than Vanilla Ice in TMNT2......NOT!

    there are better

    this movie had its drama and it was a good movie, but eminem should stick to his music career though. he works better as a hard core rapper then some guy looking for some loving.

    EMIN3M is the best rapper and singer out there.

    Who could hate eminem? He is the best person ever.I admire this rapper and actor right here. He should act more. I loved 8 mile. It was a great movie and best of all it tought me something about life. You shouldn't give up intil you get it and then you can either pursue the job or walk away from it and know in your heart you accomplished it. Feels good you know! Bye. -Vicky-

    Eminem is the man!!!!

    If you have not watched this movie, watch it, if you have, watch it!8 Mile is great to watch, especially for those who are struggling in life to be a rapper.All of the events happen in real life 2-day.8-mile just stages events that rappers who do not have it made have to go thru.Eminem is one who went thru these steps to get where he is and the movie sets a good example to those who r struggling to come up.It shows that if u believe in yourself u can be the best.

    An icon for scared white boys plays himself in a movie

    People actually paid to see this? I walked into my girlfriend's house where her younger sister was watching this and had to endure the pain and humiliation of contributing to the popularity of this clown. I wish I would have stayed at home and done something more fun, like pass a kidney stone. At least we finally have a film which naive, ignorant people of all races can watch. I will shoot myself in the face instead of watching this movie again.

    EMIN3M IS THE BEST!

    It was a very good movie, and Eminem played very good. But i think that it is very many who had herd a almost like story before if they know somethings about Eminem.(and it's very many who do that)You can say wathever you want about the movie, but Eminem is still the cutest and the best artist in the world!!!!

    Good acting, bad story

    Okay okay okay, we all know Eminem's life story, so, let's get off it! The movie was okay, but anyone who likes Eminem had heard it before, there wasn't really a plot in the movie in my opinion... but the acting was good... that's the only thing good I can think of from this movie, other than Cheddar Bob is a great name!

    The greatest movie

    I seen this movie 127 times i loved it all of the times i seen it. Eminem is so cute in it. It has a great storie line to it... The director Curtis Hanson gave eminem a great part.His steamy love seen woth actress Brittany Murphy was brilliantly done. He deserves the actor and movie of the year awards. THE MOVIE WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!
