Overview

Telecast to coincide with the six-month "anniversary" of the horrific terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Center, the powerful and poignant two-hour CBS TV documentary 9/11 grew out of an independent film project inaugurated by French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet several months before the tragedy. Originally intending to produce an in-depth study of a "typical" American fireman, from the rookie training days to matriculation as a full-fledged firefighter, the brothers virtually lived in the headquarters of the F.D.N.Y.'s Engine Seven, Ladder One company. Thus it was that the Naudets were on hand to tape record the airliner "bombing" of both towers one and two on that fateful September 11 -- and even more dramatically, one of the brothers was able to record the hectic activities of the firefighters as they courageously went about their duties in the doomed lobby of tower one -- with only minutes to spare before both towers would collapse into a sickening mass of rubble. Although the more appalling examples of carnage are tactfully left unshown, such chilling vignettes as the offcamera sounds of crashing glass, indicating that another victim has jumped to his or her death from the uppermost heights of the twin towers, are left intact, obliging CBS to run a disclaimer in hopes of sparing the victims' loved ones any further anguish too, the amount of understandable profanity spoken by the harried firefighters far exceeded anything ever heard before on mainstream American television. Telecast with only three commercial interruptions on March 10, 2002, 9/11 was dedicated to all the victims of the tragedy, with most of the proceeds going to the Uniformed Firefighter Association Scholarship Fund. The special garnered one of the highest ratings posted by CBS in years, with 38 million viewers tuning in.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Originally aired on CBS, 9/11: The Filmmakers Commemorative Edition vividly recounts the tragic events that occurred at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Brothers Gedeon and Jules Naudet, French filmmakers who had been making a documentary on the firefighters of Engine 7, Ladder 1, ended up instead capturing on film one of the most horrific events in American history. After the first plane hit, Jules followed the firefighters as they raced toward ground zero, recording everything on camera as it occurred. Over the next several hours, Naudet continued rolling, even entering the North Tower as the scene became more and more chaotic. 9/11 contains an additional 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage as well as 50 minutes of exclusive interviews, and remains among the most emotionally visceral accounts of the terrorist attack on New York City.

    Simply remarkable...

Just as there are simply too many words that have been written and said about this most horrific day in our coorperate memories, the Naudet brothers' personal account of 9/11 in Manhatten have brought us into the reality of that day with remarkable honesty, courage and simplicity. As cameramen, they certainly must echo the words of Ansel Adams, who said that he did believe that God had him in the right place at the right time to record on film the images that were before him. This film is not just one for historical archives, but one for all of us who earnestly value our personal relationships. I was deeply moved.

    Never Forget

I've seen this documentary 3 times. Each time it takes me back to where I was and what I was doing when I heard about the planes hitting. I'm only 17, but this moment in history will stay with my forever. I've seen other films about 9/11 and I've seen all the news coverage, but none of them even come close to showing you how gruesome and horrible being there actually was except this one.

    A Must-Have For All Americans

I was able to watch this movie through another source and was quite amazed at what I saw. I watched all the film footage from the news, but if you really want to see things from a closer point of view that NYFD & NYPD saw, you must purchase this DVD. It let's you see first hand that damgers our fire departments & police officers handle in such a tragic event that happened that day in September. This DVD isn't for everyone, it shows extreme film footage never to be taken lightly because it's the real deal.

    A Reviewer, A Survivor...

I happen to be directly outside the North Tower on Vessey St. & West Broadway, opposite corner from 7 World Trade on this dreadful day. As I saw this film when it aired on CBS(NYC), as well as when I purchased the DVD, I couldn't hold back the tears running down my cheeks as all feelings of fear, confusion, desperation, uselessness came back in overwhelming fashion. Remembering all the faces of people in the streets as I rushed to leave lower Manhattan. Seeing hundreds of firemen, police officers, emergency workers rushing towards the towers... This is the real deal. A must have film to let all know what happened on 9/11 from the inside. An incredible film, by a pair of incredible brothers who risked all to capture the events unfold with desregard for their own safety.

    Never forget

This footage is so unreal. It makes you realize why we need to continue to fight terriosts all over the world-- when you see the tragedy first hand like this. This is not an explotation of the events in NYC on 9/11, but rather a slap of reality. People often don't want to watch things cause it's 'too much', but if you ever want to have a 1% understanding of what really happened at ground zero that day- you need to see this documentary. It is a part of history. WE can never forget the events of that day-- and watching the footage makes it burned in your memory.

something to own, and never get rid of...

I'm only 14, and I remember the tragic events as they unfolded three years ago to the day... I really remember this special though the most... it's so heart felt and emotional, the first part of it is basically about this one amatuer guy w/ a video camera documenting the new york fire department, and this one new guy who became a part of it. Then, it's all about what happened that unforgetable day. This is not an option of maybe getting this DVD, this is a MUST HAVE, because future generations won't know what really happened, and they will have this to look back on to see what we all saw. So, spare a few bucks to buy this amazing DVD.

    Almost 'Too Real'

Imagine filming a documentary on a fire company, and looking up just in time to film the first plane crashing into the WTC a couple blocks away.Imagine actually venturing inside the WTC, with those same firemen. This isn't a collection of news footage from the street outside. This is Jules Naudet, risking his own life, to remain with the fire company, filming from inside the WTC as the events unfold. A very powerful and personal film.

    Unique and Powerful

This project offers a very unique and powerful ¿insiders view¿ of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The footage is ¿real¿ and riveting and a must see. See and hear what was going on inside the WTC while America and the world was watching.

    A heart stopper...

Never has an ''accidental moment'' captured so much. You sence the fear and confusion of those first moments as if you were actually there. This film is a priceless piece of documentary that will have a long life!
