While in Italy, the ladies make the acquaintance of a wide variety of personalities; the most fascinating of their fellow tourists -- at least in Lucy's eyes -- is free-spirited George Emerson Julian Sands. Aware that her cousin is becoming too familiar with Emerson, Charlotte demands that Lucy return to England posthaste. Lucy complacently settles for the tiresomely traditional courtship of nerdish Cecil Vyse Daniel Day-Lewis -- and then Mr. Emerson moves into the neighborhood. Lucy now finds herself on the horns of a dilemma: Should she opt for a safe, proper marriage to Cecil, or the bohemian unpredictability of the charismatic Emerson? Helena Bonham Carter stars as Lucy Honeychurch, a young English tourist in Florence whose prim and proper life is threatened by her attraction to a brooding, young romantic Julian Sands. Penned by screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, A Room with a View brought the team of producer Ishmael Merchant and director James Ivory to the peak of their international success. The film's light charm, graceful period ambience, and attractive cast -- Daniel Day-Lewis and Maggie Smith turn in splendid performances -- became their trademark. Leisurely yet engaging, the first half of A Room with a View works nicely as a travelogue of Florence; the latter half returns to the English countryside where the manors are nice, the manners even nicer, and the principals meander their way toward happily ever after.

Though they had been making films together for over two decades, director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant didn't reach widespread popular or critical success until 1986's A Room With a View. Adapted by their frequent collaborator Ruth Prawer Jhabvala from one of E.M. Forster's lighter novels, the movie is a perfectly weighted, gorgeously staged comedy of manners. In her second film, Helena Bonham Carter made quite an impression as Lucy, and she spent much of the decade typecast in stuffy period-piece roles. Daniel Day Lewis provides spot-on work as the uptight, priggish suitor Cecil, a marked contrast to his almost polar-opposite role in Stephen Frears's My Beautiful Laundrette, which marked him as a new actor of unusual versatility. He would become a sex symbol two years later in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Room was nominated for eight Academy Awards and brought home three, including one for Jhabvala's adaptation.

    Lost in Transformation

    This "special edition" of E.M. Forster's charming and trenchant work has been badly compromised by its "remastering." The colors are often "washed out " and the contrasts are so extreme that many of the darker scenes are barely visible. I bought this new edition with considerable expectations, but, no matter how many "special features" I was offered, I was disappointed. As soon as I had watched it, I played my older DVD of the movie and found I was justified in my complaint. Anyone who can find the original DVD second hand should buy it. This is too marvelous a movie to be ruined by poor reproduction technique. I give the "title" only 3 stars in its present manifestation I give it 5 (or more?) stars in the original one. In other words, it's not the "title" I object to. It's the new reproduction. Too bad!

    The View From This Room Is Stunning!

    'A Room With A View' is the sumptuous Merchant/Ivory production of E.M. Forster's novel about a young woman, Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham-Carter) who longs to escape her claustrophobic life. To this end she's drawn to two men of varying virtue; George (Julian Sands) a fiery, passionate dreamer - alive with living, whom she meets while in Venice and Cecil (Daniel Day Lewis) the snobbish and stale, though socially acceptable, man about town from London. This is a fabulous production, elegantly mounted and rich in stellar performances that sadly, are in very short supply in today's cinema. Dame Maggie Smith is simply charming as Lucy¿s spinster and prattling aunt. But particularly with Bonham-Carter, one simply wishes that she would play more such roles. At long last ¿Room With A View¿ is preserved properly on home video. After a previously issued disc that frankly, wasn't worth the cheap piece of plastic it was minted on, this new 2-disc version does right on all accounts. The picture is stunning in a new 16:9 anamorphic transfer. Colors are rich and well balanced. Contrast and shadow levels are bang on. There is some slight shimmering but nothing to terribly distract. The audio is 5.1 and nicely represented. The music is the real kicker here. Extras include some interesting archival footage, a truncated BBC featurette which inexplicably just stops in the middle of an interview, a bit about the author and a very informative audio commentary. Regardless of the extra features shortcomings, the view from this room is stunning. Recommended!

    Oh, what a view!

    This is a wonderfully made Victorian period, romantic-comedy. The locations where this film is shot are breath taking. The film starts with a young British heiress, Lucy, on holiday in Florence, Italy with her much older cousin, Charlotte. They are upset because their rooms do not have a view as promised. A father, Mr. Emmerson, and son, George, offer their rooms with splendid views in exchange. Lucy has an encounter with George while on a picnic overlooking Florence that leaves a lasting impression on them both. The cinematography is excellent and so embellishes what is going on with the characters of this film. Likewise, the music perfectly suits the mood of the film, as well. This is a story well told, and excellently acted and filmed. I highly recommend it.

    ROMANTIC, OUTSTANDING

    The most romantic movie I have ever seen, with a little humor. I adored George character, his love for Lucy is endless and Lucy is so afraid of loving him but very brave in making a choice. Simply beautiful, the views are perfect, and of course, outstanding casts.

    What a kiss!

    One of the most romantic kisses ever in a movie...right up there with the sea-going staircase Gary Grant/Deborah Kerr kiss in ''An Affair to Remember.''

    what an adaptation!

    This movie was one of those that captures the (quirky) tone of the book beautifully...except that the end of the book is sadder, more depressing, so I am glad the movie departed from it there...A film that makes the return to every day life very difficult! GREAT music! AND, from one who loves and makes costumes, the clothing is exquisite. Enjoy!

    Wonderful Movie!

    This is one of the only movies I have ever seen that is better than the book! E.M.Forster would be proud to have this movie represent his novel of the same name. I still recommend the book as a companion to the movie. The Ivory Merchant company knows how to make great movies.

    Perfect!

    ¿A Room with a View¿ is one of my favorites. Everyone's at their best here: Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Judi Dench, Simon Callow.... My personal favorite is Daniel Day-Lewis as Helena Bonham Carter¿s snobbish husband-to-be. ¿A Room with a View¿ is charming, highly recommended!
