A Rumor Of Angels

( 2 )

Overview

Drama is the name of the game in the three-hanky weepy A Rumor of Angels. MGM's work on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very concise save for a few instances of edge enhancement in the image. Otherwise this is a quality transfer that sports sharp colors, even black levels, and natural fleshtones. Also available on side B is a full-frame version of the film. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and features a few directional effects in a scattered amount of key scenes....

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A coastal community in Maine plays host to paranormal forces in this beautifully acted drama, which initially dwells on sorrowful secrets but broadens its scope to acknowledge the therapeutic power of confession. The piece is anchored by Vanessa Redgrave's flinty portrayal of local eccentric Maddy Bennett, whose solitary existence in a ramshackle hilltop home is disrupted by her unexpected encounter with a 12-year-old boy. James Trevor Morgan -- who is still traumatized by the death of his beloved mother -- has difficulty relating to his emotionally distant father Ray Liotta, stern stepmother Catherine McCormack, and spaced-out uncle Ron Livingston. James comes to embrace Maddy as a mentor of sorts, and the unlikely pair's relationship forms the movie's emotional core, as she teaches him the value of hard work and an appreciation for classical music, among other things. Director Peter O'Fallon Suicide Kings employs otherworldly touches - bonfire flames flicker ominously, murmurs waft through the salt air -- to set the stage for powerful scenes such as one where Maddy reveals she's still in contact with her long-dead son. These macabre moments lend atmosphere to O'Fallon's drama but don't obscure its message: Listening to the living is more important than pining for the dead. A Rumor of Angels conveys that message by virtue of strong scripting, sensitive direction, and earnest performances.

A beam of light in the darkness

How amazing life can be. I came across this movie quite by accident (is there really such a thing as 'accident'?) as I was searching for something else. I didn't find what I was looking for, perhaps because I was meant to find this! A lovely, heartwarming and comforting movie at a time when the world seems to have gone mad with violence, revenge, and such. You'd think there's no such thing as compassion! You'd think that there's no such thing as angels. But when you've seen this movie, you'll be glad you aren't so sure. How sad that the media is filled with images and noise that dishearten, whilst a beautifully thought-out and acted film like this with all kinds of layers and subtext gets no coverage! But maybe it's meant to be like that. We always find what we're looking for. :)

    Where had this movie been?

I do not ever remember seeing this movie in theatre advertisements. This movie is wonderful! The acting is superb and the plot inspiring. We need more movies that speak to our grief issues and walk us through the pain of loss. Well worth the time and the money!
