Overview

Carl Lee Hailey Samuel L. Jackson takes the law into his own hands after the legal system fails to adequately punish the men who brutally raped and beat his daughter, leaving her for dead. Normally, a distraught father could count on some judicial sympathy in those circumstances. Unfortunately, Carl and his daughter are black, and the assailants are white, and all the events take place in the South. Indeed, so inflammatory is the situation, that the local KKK led by Kiefer Sutherland becomes popular again. When Hailey chooses novice lawyer Jake Brigance Matthew McConaughey to handle his defense, it begins to look like a certainty that Carl will hang, and Jake's career and perhaps his life will come to a premature end. Despite the efforts of the NAACP and local black leaders to persuade Carl to choose some of their high-powered legal help, he remains loyal to Jake, who had helped his brother with a legal problem before the story begins. Jake eventually takes this case seriously enough to seek help from his old law-school professor Donald Sutherland. When death threats force his family to leave town, Jake even accepts the help of pushy young know-it-all lawyer Ellen Roark Sandra Bullock.

    Too Bad!

It's too bad that another Grisham plot is interrupted by the formatting of the disc! Half the movie is on side One; the other half is on side Two!! So if you want to see the whole of the movie, you have to get up, go to the DVD player and turn the disc over. There is no earthly reason for splitting the movie in this way, and no indication on the cover that this is the way it is formatted. Otherwise, a griping, tragic and suspenseful story based on what to some may seem outdated attitudes, but which ring very true even today.

    A Movie for our Times

Our country may not always like to face itself, but when it does it is at its best--and an example for countries abroad. As our country is changing demographically and racially, this is a movie that should be watched as racial tension and brutality is always native to the United States. It is as Samuel L. Jackson said, "A battlefield."

    The other perspective

When I saw this movie I knew this was something that could begin putting a dent into the whole racial experience. Who knows what they would have done in this situation. But the subliminal messages were most powerful.

    This Is A Great Movie

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I'm not just saying that because I'm in love with Matthew McConaughey, although I have to admit he gave a brillant performance. It's a very touching movie. It deals with discrimination and justice. My favorite part of the movie is near the end when Jake(McConaughey) tells everyone the story of the little girl. It brings everyone to tears including me. I reccommend for everyone to see this movie.
