Overview

    When we die, we go to France!

    As good as living in France can get. It is a true to life description of the French living in Provence with real French people. This serie is so close to reality it is troubling. Unique and Funny as only as Europeans can be. The key word here is culture, details and joy of life in France...Enjoy the show!

    A little disappointing for John Thaw fans

    As a strong John Thaw fan, I am currently on a mission to see as many of his performances as possible in addition to reading as many books on him as I can. Therefore, "A Year in Provence" is a little disappointing as it would be considered very light fare in lieu of the usual excellent and absorbing action that I have come to expect from "Inspector Morse," "Kavanaugh QC," "Good Night Mr. Tom," etc. The landscapes are lovely and the character acting is sweet, so I would recommend the movie as a light romp in pastoral France as opposed to a movie that showcases John Thaw's incredible acting ability that I love so much.

    Even a rose has it's thorns

    When an ad executive retires to Provence, friends he never knew he had come to visit. While the first two episodes seemed strained, the story soon takes on a life of its own. Provence looks lovely in spring and summer, less so in winter. The casting was wonderful and the characterizations rich. Several nights of viewing pleasure await, and you can pass it on to family and friends. Makes a nice gift.

    12 Wonderful Hours

    Video version of Peter Mayle's best selling book of the same name. Story is divided into 12 hourly episodes, one for each month in the Mayle's 1st year of their adventure of abandoning professional lives in London for life in Provence. We suggest watching an hour each week and just let yourselves be seduced by the beauty of Provence. NOTE: No sex, foul language or violence. Just a very pleasant and amusing story of two Brits coming to terms with what it means to live in Provence.

    Fun in France

    This DVD is very much like the book. I feel the actors were a wonderful choice for their parts. The movie gives an voyeuristic view of the lives of this couple making a life for themselves in Provence, France. They leave England and start fixing up a beautiful old farm house in the countryside. The characters they meet and have to deal with teach them things about their new country and their new neighbors that are priceless and entertaining.

    A Good Year
    Under the Tuscan Sun

    A Year In Provence

    I saw this movie quite awhile ago, so finding it again and in DVD format was a happy day for me. It takes at least one season (the series is 4 seasons hence 1 year) to get into the characters and situations. Now that I am older (54) I don't find it as quaint in certain parts of the story. For instance, the neighbor, who is so strange and dirty bringing odd gifts of dead animals that smell really made me cringe. When I was younger, I found all that endearing and colorful, now I want to stay away.
    On the whole, the idea of getting away from the rat race and finding the "country home" is still quite appealing. As the two characters get to know their new life and learn to accept the pitfalls, it does become a "home". My favorite part was when they opted to help the baker make the bread. They needed to so they could keep getting good bread (what else do you come to France for?) and to keep the reputation of the community. One of the great draws is the food in Provence which was richly shown in the beginning scenes. The couple take their first meal after retirement that would almost put you out. Wow!
    All in all it is dated but the charm comes through and you do want to at least visit this charming area if not move in.

    John Thaw Does Immense Justice to Peter Mayle's Festive Book.

    Once more, disagree w/"Rovi" critic's review.I read this First.Then,saw the film on PBS.John Thaw plays a Crumudgeon better than Any Actor yet.I found this delightfully witty.Quite engaging and actually learned so much more.Combined,the Book and the Film are a treat of a merger.Of course there are Antics.However,since this is not Fiction,adhered to the Real Lives rather brilliantly.There was not a Second Year on Film known,Tho' Was in written format. Of course,suggest reading.Watch w/o the Critique of "Rovi" first. Your review is All that Matters. {I keep reading the same 'Spin' of Why Watch Films from Rovi Writers.Not certain They like Anything,Collectively}.Truth, Not Disrespect.

    If you enjoy John Thaw you will enjoy A Year In Provence!

    I admit the ghost of Inspector Morse lingered through the first episode, but soon he faded away and we were highly entertained by A Year In Provence. We plan to watch it again this year.
