Overview

They don't really go to Mars, they go to Venus, but first they go to New Orleans. While working at a missile base, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello inadvertently launch a rocket ship with themselves aboard. After a wild ride around New York City (the Statue of Liberty ducks when the rocket heads her way), Bud and Lou land in the outskirts of New Orleans. The boys are convinced that they've reached Mars, and their faith in this supposition is affirmed when they come across several strangely costumed "creatures" (actually revellers at the Mardi Gras). Meanwhile, bank robbers Jack Kruschen and Horace McMahon stow away on A&C's rocketship. When Bud and Lou return, the crooks force them to make a quick getaway into outer space. After several days of weightlessness, the four space travellers land on Venus, a planet populated by the gorgeous winners of the Miss Universe contest (including Anita Ekberg). Venusian queen Mari Blanchard falls in love with Costello, only to order him and his companions to return to earth when Lou proves to be unfaithful. Reportedly, this bizarre melange of sci-fi and slapstick was based on a story by Charles Beaumont, who received no screen credit (it's worth noting that Beaumont's later Queen of Outer Space boasts a remarkably similar plotline). Long considered the team's worst film, Abbott and Costello Go to Mars ("and about time!" quipped the New York Times' TV-movie reviewer) is rather likeable in its own incoherent way.

This collection takes us back to the days when comedy was actually funny and didn't require titillation (or worse) as a substitute for humor! For those of us who remember the movies from our younger years it is truly a "blast from the past"! For those of us who think Bette Midler originated "Boogy Woogy Bugle Boy", meet the Andrews Sisters. The pamphlet that accompanies the collection is packed with tidbits of info that adds to the enjoyment of the movies. My husband and I enjoyed the first movie we watched so much that we now have an Abbott & Costello movie night every Saturday night. We no longer surf the channels searching for something to watch on TV - RECOMMENDATION FOR FAMILIES: What a great collection for you to share with your children (one movie at a time) on a Saturday or Sunday night. Make a big bowl of popcorn and get ready to laugh your heads off. This is humor you can feel comfortable sharing with even young children!

My dad and I rented "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" about twice a month before we got this set. We searched all the movie rental places for some other Abbott and Costello movies, but failed to find one. I got this box set for Christmas, and was jumping up and down and screaming and saying that this is the best Christmas ever because of this. My dad and I love these movies. They are not horror movies. They are meant to be humorous horror movies, but they were made so long ago, they are very, very funny. We get a kick out of the bad special effects. For example, you can see wires steering fake bats. Every Friday and Saturday night I nag and nag my dad asking him if we can watch one of these movies. The music in these is very fun to listen to. They are in black and white, but when you watch them you don't notice. These are fine for everyone. There is nothing inappropriate, but Abbott calls Costello "stupid" a lot. I highly recommend this for any humor fan.

I grew up watching Abbot and Costello on the Saturday Morning Matinee television shows. After buying this collection my kids started to watch them also. They love watching Abbot and Costello, even though the movies are black and white. Especially the monster-themed shows. We've enjoyed watching these family-friendly movies together.

I grew up with Abbott & Costello, as their films were often played on afternoon TV when I was young. "Hold That Ghost" was one of the first of their films I ever saw, and there's a very informative commentary track included with that film in this package. But that's not all! More commentaries are included, along with a handy booklet that tells you which of A&C's classic routines are on which movie. This feature is incredibly helpful when you're thinking, "When did they do that routine about the mustard?" With the addition of "It Ain't Hay," we can finally see every film that Abbott & Costello made for Universal Studios. Now all I have to do is convince MGM to do the same and my collection will be complete. If you appreciate film history, and especially the history of the most famous comedy team of all time, I know you'll enjoy viewing this collection. Pick it up today!
