Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Fashion is still religion for Patsy and Edina in Absolutely Special, two special episodes of Jennifer Saunders' legendary BBC comedy, Absolutely Fabulous. It probably goes without saying that Saunders plays Edina Monsoon, a deliciously self-absorbed fashionista publicist who, along with her alcoholic, anorexic childhood friend Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), cuts a debauched swath through London's fashion scene. But Edina's offspring are the focus in these two shows, and 1996's "The Last Shout," a two-parter made shortly after Ab Fab's original three-season run, finds Edina's ever-virginal daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha), engaged to be married. Saunders raises the upside-down generation gap between tragically hip mother and square daughter to new comic heights, while a skiing holiday showcases her easy way with physical comedy and sight gags. And what could more fabulous than watching Edina genuflecting her way through the boutique of Christian Lacroix? "Gay," the second special, combines a riotous trip to New York City's Fashion Week with a search for Edina's son, Serge. An amusing glimpse of NYC's gay nightlife and a sharp cameo from Whoopi Goldberg as a gay guidance counselor stand out, and Ab Fab fans will likely thrill to the chance to finally lay eyes on Edina's oft-mentioned-but-never-seen prodigal child. Surprisingly, despite the layoff of more than five years between these two productions, they play almost seamlessly together, particularly when it comes to the wry humor surrounding the homosexual potential embedded in Edina and Patsy's friendship. It’s a pleasure to see Saunders' confident comic style and informed social satire thrive in the new millennium, and together these Ab Fab specials stand as highlights of one of television's cult-comedy triumphs.
