Overview

Though USA Entertainment has released some good DVDs in the past few years, they rarely have gone out of their way. Agnes Browne is no exception. On the plus side, the image on this disc is better than average. Everything from flesh tones, to contrast, to the nice use of color comes across very well. The disc is dual-layered with both a full-frame version and the theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which does use an anamorphic transfer. The sound on the other hand, is nothing to get excited about. It's fine as it ...

The disc is dual-layered with both a full-frame version and the theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which does use an anamorphic transfer. The sound on the other hand, is nothing to get excited about. It's fine as it is, but the two-channel surround (which equates to a four-channel track) lacks imagination. The film is dialogue-driven, and certainly doesn't have anything that would remotely exploit the surround speakers. The only soundtrack here is in English, but there are subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. Though USA Entertainment has utilized commentaries on a couple of discs, they have never been known to be feature-intensive. Other than a trailer, this one does have some biographies and filmographies for the main actors -- a nice plus, but really nothing spectacular.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A sentimental tale saved from terminal sappiness by its likable protagonist, Agnes Browne gives Anjelica Huston who also directed her finest role in years. She's letter erfect as Agnes, the recently widowed Irish mother who ekes out a meager living selling produce and struggles to raise her seven children. It's a tough life for the widow Browne, and one that takes an unexpected turn when a French baker Arno Chevrier begins to exhibit romantic interest in her. Huston is particularly well suited as both star and director of this quirky drama based on Brendan O'Carroll's novel The Mammy. She spent her childhood in Ireland, where the story takes place, and retains a readily apparent affection for its customs, traditions, and inhabitants. Moreover, she plays Agnes without the teeth-gnashing histrionics often found in similar stories and elicits equally skilled, understated performances from supporting players Chevrier and Marion O'Dwyer. Agnes Browne represents Huston at her best -- on both sides of the camera.

    Best in Years

This movie is one of the best movies I have seen in years!! Funny, poignant story of courage, love and friendship, tenacity and strength in the midst of hard times. I have recommended this film to all my women friends.
