Overview

Dodes'ka-Den aka Dodesukaden was Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's first project since Red Beard 1965, and his first ever in color. Kurosawa focuses this time on Tokyo slum life. We watch as a variety of unfortunates debase themselves to survive, yet, somehow, emerge with more innate dignity than the so-called "better" people. While it seems inconceivable that Dodes'ka-Den would fail at the box office, fail it did upon its original release. The Japanese distributors hastily pared down the film's 244 minutes to 140 unfortunately destroying the original negative in the process, but this version also came a cropper. It was the negative reaction to Dodes'ka-Den, which allegedly prompted Kurosawa to attempt suicide. Happily, he survived to reclaim his industry stature with 1976's Dersu Uzala.

Stunning collection of ground-breaking film artistry

I purchased this on a whim, never really planning to spend what I thought to be an outrageous amount of money on a collection of movies I'd largely never heard of. The main deciding factor was that I had my mind set on buying three individual DVDs - the only three Kurosawa films I'd ever seen - and each was $40 to this 25 DVD set's average of only $13 per DVD.

Once I watched the only three from the collection I recognized, Seven Samurai, Rashoman, and Yojimbo, I decided to simply pick one at random and pop it in the DVD player.

True to his level of skill, Akira Kurosawa kept me interested in The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, which felt at times more real, more here and now, than many films made more than six decades later.

Akira Kurosawa is simply a magnificent artist when it comes to cinematography. I truly look forward to enjoying each and every one of the remaining DVDs that I have not yet viewed, and I now see how much of a very good deal this set is when compared to buying each DVD individually.

One thing to be wary of, as stated in a previous review, is that there are no bonus features in this set as there are on the individual DVDs. As I am mainly interested in the films themselves, this was not a drawback in my mind, and saved me $27 per film!

Overall, this set is a fantastic buy, and holds many hours of enjoyment for fans of Kurosawa films and fans of classic movies alike.

    Almost Perfect Collection

This collection is excellent for anybody who does not already own many of Akira Kurosawa's films. The only drawback is the lack of additional features that are included with the individual purchase of the movies. The box and dvd design is great. Again, this is an excellent buy for anyone who loves Akira Kurosawa but hasn't already invested hundreds of dollars into individual dvd purchases.
