Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
A handsomely designed DVD box set containing four classic films by Akira Kurosawa would normally be reason enough for internationally minded cinephiles to rejoice. But the package becomes absolutely indispensable when one discovers that the films themselves have been given the prestigious Criterion Collection treatment. From beautiful transfers, definitive subtitles, and insightful extras, the pleasures are many. The Seven Samurai 1954, an epic tale of a rag-tag team of sword specialists defending a village, may be one of the most copied films of all time -- evidence ranges from The Magnificent Seven to Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars. But the original, with its perfect mix of Eastern and Western influences, has never been bettered. The same goes for 1958's The Hidden Fortress, whose narrative about a princess in peril reappears in barely concealed form in George Lucas's original Star Wars. Yojimbo 1961 and its 1963 sequel, Sanjuro, find Kurosawa placing his indelible stamp on the burgeoning antiheroic movement, with actor Toshio Mifune as a wandering mercenary who speaks softly and carries an ancient katana sword -- which is, of course, far cooler than a big stick. Yojimbo later served as the blueprint for Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, followed by countless imitators. Full of savage action and high drama, this essential samurai quartet shows Kurosawa at his brilliant, crowd-pleasing best. Volk Lindsay
