Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Long before his portrayal of Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi made him a favorite of the MTV generation, Alec Guinness was an international movie star who seemed constitutionally incapable of giving a bad performance. Essentially a character actor whose matchless skill and forceful personality eventually pushed him into leading roles, Guinness brightened a whole slew of zesty comedies made for England’s legendary Ealing Studios, and five of the best have now been collected in this five-disc Anchor Bay DVD box set. Kind Hearts and Coronets 1949, likely the best of the bunch, is a devilish black comedy in which a titled family’s black sheep sets out to kill his relatives -- all of them played by Guinness! The Lavender Hill Mob 1951 stars Guinness as a timid bank clerk who plots to rob a truckload of gold bullion, while in The Man in the White Suit also 1951 he plays the eccentric inventor of an indestructible fabric. The Captain’s Paradise 1953 casts him as a carefree sailor with wives in every port, and The Ladykillers pits him against a seemingly harmless old lady with some surprises up her lace sleeves. Every film in this collection is a winner, a droll little masterpiece turned out as only the English can. The writing sparkles, the direction is spot-on, and the performances are uniformly stellar. These delightful comedies have all stood the test of time and will no doubt delight fans for years to come on DVD.
