Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Movie buffs and DVD collectors who need but a sampling of Alfred Hitchcock’s work could scarcely do better than this three-disc set comprising two classic feature films and a handful of Hitchcock-directed episodes from his popular TV series. Rear Window 1954, adapted from a Cornell Woolrich short story, follows a wheelchair-bound shut-in James Stewart who believes he has observed a murder committed by someone in an adjoining building. It is a Stewart tour de force and a superior outing for costars Grace Kelly, a pre-Perry Mason Raymond Burr, and Thelma Ritter. The Man Who Knew Too Much 1956 pairs Stewart with Doris Day, who warbles the Oscar-winning "Que Sera, Sera" while trying to disentangle herself and Stewart from an assassination plot overseas. A suspenseful reworking of the director’s 1934 film of the same title, The Man Who Knew Too Much enjoyed even greater critical and commercial success than its predecessor, and it remains a favorite of Hitchcock devotees. The third disc includes five TV episodes, directed by the Master himself, culled from several seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents: "Arthur" starring Laurence Harvey and Hazel Court; "The Horseplayer" Claude Rains; "The Crystal Trench" James Donald;"Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat" Audrey Meadows; and one of the very best half hours, "Bang! You’re Dead," featuring future Lost in Space and Babylon Five figure Bill Mumy. The two features are represented by Universal’s Special Editions, complete with audio commentaries by the director’s daughter Pat and other filmmakers, documentaries on the films’ production, still galleries, production notes, and original theatrical trailers.
