Overview

Alfred Hitchcock entered the 1970s with his commercial reputation virtually in tatters, a far cry from his stature at the start of the 1960s. Then, he'd been in the middle of the massively successful trio of movies, North by Northwest, Psycho, and The Birds, and was a ubiquitous presence on television thanks to his anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents -- but the series ended, and he'd suffered three expensive box-office failures in a row, Marnie, Torn Curtain, and Topaz, in the second half of the 1960s.

He redeemed himself with Frenzy, however, which marked his return not only to England for the first time in 20 years but also to the subject matter with which he'd started his career in thrillers back in 1926 -- murder, and a hunt for a serial killer in London. As the latest female victim of the "Necktie Murderer" is found in the Thames, raped and strangled, we meet Richard Blaney Jon Finch, a bitter, belligerent ex-Royal Air Force officer who can't seem to find his way in life. He drinks too much and holds grudges too easily, and has an explosive temper, which is very near the surface as he's just lost his job. We also meet his girlfriend, a barmaid Anna Massey; his ex-wife, a professional matchmaker Barbara Leigh-Hunt; and his best friend, Covent Garden fruit seller Bob Rusk Barry Foster. Their connection to the necktie murders will be clear to us in the first 30 minutes of the movie and, not coincidentally, completely misinterpreted by the police, as Chief Inspector Oxford Alec McCowan and his men tighten a circle around the wrong man, who rapidly runs out of options and allies. The chase and suspense are classic Hitchcock, favorably recalling a dozen of his earlier movies, from The Lodger and The 39 Steps through Saboteur and Spellbound to Dial M for Murder and North by Northwest, with some new twists and the added energy afforded by the extensive use of actual London locations. There's also a good deal more sex and nudity here than Hitchcock was ever allowed to use in his earlier movies, owing to the relaxation of "decency" standards that had taken place in the years leading up to this production. The suspense derives from multiple interlocking and overlapping layers of uncertainty -- when will each of the two men, suspect and murderer, slip? And which will slip first? When and how will the police realize their mistake, and will it be in time to save the innocent man? Amid the straightforward storytelling and thriller elements, Hitchcock manages to slip in a few bravura cinematic moments, the best of them a pullback shot down a flight of stairs into a busy street as the killer invites his next victim into his home, as well as a scene aboard a truck, with a murderer desperately wrestling with a corpse hidden in a sack of potatoes. Frenzy was adapted from Arthur La Bern's novel Goodbye Picadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by mystery aficionado Anthony Shaffer, but for all of that and its decidedly modern trappings of sex and violence, it bears the indelible stylistic stamp of Alfred Hitchcock.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
We're not certain that each of the 14 movies compiled in this deluxe box set rates the "masterpiece" designation, but there's no arguing that the lion's share of them fall into that category. For example, Shadow of a Doubt 1942, starring Joseph Cotten as a murderer who hides from the police by staying with unsuspecting family members, has been consistently underrated. Rear Window ’54 never ceases to impress, and Hitchcock's ’56 remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, starring James Stewart and Doris Day, is even better than the director's much-praised ’34 version. Although the gimmicky Rope ’48, shot in a series of ten-minute "takes," comes off today as overly theatrical and self-satisfied, it still commands respect for the ingenuity needed to pull it off. The Trouble with Harry ’56 continues to delight lovers of black comedy, a subgenre rarely explored -- but definitely appreciated -- by this gifted filmmaker. Psycho ’60 remains the definitive Hitchcock shocker for many fans, although devotees who've studied the director's life believe that Vertigo ’58, a gripping study of obsession, is far more illustrative of Hitch's personality. And who can forget the simple, unadulterated creepiness of The Birds ’62? Terrific movies, all of them. So much so, in fact, that the relative weakness of Saboteur ’42, Marnie ’64, Torn Curtain ’66, Topaz ’69, Frenzy ’72, and Family Plot ’76 might seem more apparent due to their inclusion in this collection with the better films. Happily, the good far outweighs the middling, and the box set is tailor-made for thriller fans eager to get heavily Hitched.

    Hitchcock's Masterpiece...well Universal's anyways

I would just like to clarify a comment made by another reviewer who wrote: "How dissappointing that "Notorious", "North by Northwest" and especially "Rebecca" aren't included in this so-called "Masterpiece" set." Well...this set is released by Universal Pictures which did not produce any of those films. "North By Northwest" and "Strangers On A Train" (as yet another reviewer listed) were released by Warner Bros., while "Rebecca" was released by United Artists and "Notorious" by RKO. Criterion had released worthy editions of "Rebecca" and "Notorious" as well as another rare Hitchcock gem "Spellbound". I just felt that the "disappointing" rating given was unnecessary. Even the "film student" got these wrong as well.

    Nice Lineup

What a list of great films. Ok, lets see: The Birds, Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo, Shadow of a Doubt, The Man who Knew Too Much, and all together? That's fantastic news! As with any collection of this sort, there are some obvious omissions: Rebbeca, Notorious, North by Northwest are some things you should probably pick up in addition to this nice set. Really, you won't regret it. All three of Hitchcock's films starring Jimmy Stewart are found here (and all three of them are fantastic) That said, there are some films that are less popular here. Although many of these are still great films, they probably aren't what you would expect from Hitchcock. The Family Plot and The Trouble with Harry are some of the rare comedies. Harry is a fun british "what do we do with the body scenario." Marnie is a drama that is put together like The Birds, only without any birds. It involves delving into the title character's psyche quite a bit, and mostly without supernatural help. It goes well with Sean Connery at the helm. While these are not the normal Hichcock bunch, they are still good films (much better than the usual filler these kinds of collections get- you normally see ones that don't even look like hitchcock)

    Overlooked again.

How dissappointing that "Notorious", "North by Northwest" and especially "Rebecca" aren't included in this so-called "Masterpiece" set. Let me just mention here that "Rebecca" was his ONLY film that won an Oscar for Best Picture. That is his most over-looked film, and it really is a shame.

    Great-Looking Set

I have waited for a long time regarding an Alfred Hitchcock collection that would bring together his best films. It seems that it has finally arrived. Despite a few ommissions ("Strangers on a Train", "North By Northwest", and "Notorious") this set contains some of his best-known works ("Psycho", "The Birds", "Vertigo") that make its hefty price tag worth it. I'll be there for this one.

    The Ultimate Box-Set!

What a line-up! Did somebody use the term "Masterpiece"? How did "Torn Curtain" and "Topaz" get in there? (Forget I said that!) Saboteur Shadow Of A Doubt Rope Rear Window The Trouble With Harry The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) Vertigo Psycho The Birds Marnie Torn Curtain Topaz Frenzy Family Plot + Bonus Disc What can I do? I own most of the titles already. I still feel a disloyalty to Sir Alfie if I don't get it. I felt the same way about "The Audrey Hepburn Collection". Oh, what the heck! I might as well buy it. They're all getting "facelifts" to boot! How can I have original one-sheet posters of "Psycho", "Vertigo" and "Rear Window" hung up in my house if I turn down the chance to own that BONUS DISC? I don't drink or smoke, so I'll reward myself (just this once!) Now you Hitch lovers have no excuse not to join me. It's only well-invested money. You can always give your duplicate DVDs to grateful friends. Maybe they'll reciprocate and treat you to dinner and a movie! [filmfactsman]
