While each of the discs boasts a making-of documentary, only the Strangers on a Train disc offers a vast array of extras. In addition to a commentary track featuring a variety of people who have an interest in the film, a second version of the film is offered. That cut of the movie, uncovered in 1991, was a preview edition put together before the theatrical cut. Although each of these discs is a available individually, this box set offers the most cost-effective way to acquire all nine titles.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Alfred Hitchcock was named by Entertainment Weekly as the Greatest Director of All Time. A solid case for this could be made with The Signature Collection, featuring nine classics from the Master of Suspense -- seven of which are available for the first time on DVD. The most anticipated of these is 1951's Strangers on a Train, starring Farley Granger as a champion tennis player who meets pushy playboy Robert Walker while en route to Washington, D.C. Both men have problems, and when Walker suggests they take care of each other's dirty work, a morbid chain of events is unleashed. The two-disc Strangers on a Train features the original theatrical release as well as an alternate "preview" version of the film, commentaries, featurettes, and more. Also included in The Signature Collection are Dial M for Murder originally shown in 3-D; Foreign Correspondent, starring Joel McCrea; Henry Fonda in The Wrong Man; Marlene Dietrich and Jane Wyman in Stage Fright; Montgomery Clift and Karl Malden in I Confess; Mr. and Mrs. Smith, one of Hitchcock's rare forays into comedy; Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine in Suspicion; and the previously available, Oscar-winning North by Northwest.

    REAR WINDOW?

"Rear Window", starring Christopher Reeves. For a disabled actor, Christopher did an excellent job in his portrayal of his part. More emotionally moving than James Stuart in the original version. An actor very much loved and missed.

Rebecca was already released on DVD

Rebecca was already released on DVD by a different company (Rebecca: Criterion Collection). Warner Brothers doesn't own the rights to Rebecca so they can't put it in this collection. Universal Studios owns the rights to most of the other Hitchcock movies and they have already been released. Criterion DVD's are more expensive ($35.99 or so) but they are excellent in quality. The only one I've had a problem with is Spellbound which doesn't play on some DVD players.
