A skewering satire of the theatre world, All About Eve entertains while it eviscerates. This is a film that really does have it all: Joseph L. Mankiewicz's sure-handed direction and gloriously poisonous screenplay, celluloid diva Bette Davis at her disdainful best, uniformly excellent performances from the supporting cast, and costumes that further demonstrate that designer Edith Head did indeed give good wardrobe. The fact that All About Eve swept the 1950 Academy Awards speaks to all of these qualities, but a great deal of the film's historical and cinematic importance lies in its content. For years, Broadway had taken aim at Hollywood, and now the tables were turned with considerable venom. Mankiewicz's script summoned into existence a whole array of painfully recognizable theatre types, from the aging, egomaniacal grand dame to the outwardly docile, inwardly scheming ingenue to the powerful critic who reeks of malignant charm. The fact that the film succeeds in delivering such a wallop without descending into bitchy tirade makes it an enduring testament to the powers of elegant satire, further proof that there is no more dangerous combination than wit and a typewriter.

    5 Cheers for Eve...

    While some may feel that another picture deserved the "Best Picture" honors that year, I "heartily" agree with "All About Eve" being the ultimate recipient of the gilded guy. The elements - the players, the dialogue, the setting - not only were perfect for their time, but hold up well so many years later. The dialogue, so snappily and sharply flung by the cast as joyfully as one may play with darts, delights me each time I put this movie in my DVD player. My favorite line: "Remind me to tell you about the time I looked into the heart of an artichoke." Not one of the more quoted lines but a line that so brilliantly inspires my need to be sarcastic. The camaraderie of the characters (before and during the appearance of Eve) is so familiar and comfortable that it makes me feel that I am really a fly-on-the-wall of an actual backstage scenario, not just a made-up one. These people really have been dealing with each other's egos, successes and failures and adjusting "just fine". Then Eve shows up...

    Bette Davis at her best

    The movie that inspired all the Bette Davis impersonators and gave Marilyn Monroe her start. Great cast geat plot one movie that is all it is cracked up to be.

    Bette Davis Does it Again

    This film was very interesting indeed! The acting, led by the superb Bette Davis, is brilliant. I think the casting was wonderful and the dialogue witty. This is a very entertaining film and makes one think about professional and social relationships and their meaning. I think Bette Davis is the best and as always gives a stunning performance.

    A classic everyone should see

    Forget about the movie being in black and white. All About Eve is a rags to riches tale that so many other films after it have tried to capture the dynamic of this story. I am thankful that I have a mother who likes classics and appreciates a good story because it is her who made sure that I first watched this movie on Turner Movie Classics (R) sure it is not action packed but you have to love the narration that accompanies this film.

    Fasten Your Seatbelts.. It's Going to Be A Bumpy Night!

    I first watched this movie because of a Marilyn Monroe kick I was on but within the first 5 minutes, I was taken with the severity and fierce presence of Bette Davis and didn't even notice Marilyn! Right up there with Sunset Boulevard, this is one of the best movies about The Business- SB focusing on The Movies, EVE focusing on The Theatre. As the movie and storyline develop, the viewer can almost feel the tension in the air, as if it is leaking through the tv screen. The casting was simply perfection from Bette Davis to Thelma Ritter, who is always a delight playing second fiddle to virtually every leading lady in Hollywood. The movie, if possible, is even more amazing when you know a little of the background info- Anne Baxter and Bette Davis had a real life relationship very similar to that of their characters, Bette Davis and leading man Gary Merrill fell in love during filming, married, and 10 yrs later had a not-so-friendly divorce. I've been to film school and believe me, kids, everything they teach you can be learned by watching this film. A true classic.

    A reviewer

    After more than 50 years the crackling dialogue in this ode to the backstabbing New York theater scene remains pungent, if not entirely apropos (there's far more of a collaborative spirit than Mankiewicz is willing to admit here). But everyone is perfectly cast and the film actually benefits from the flat, rather droll cinematography. It's been (and will undoudtedly continue to be) an actor's film for generations.

    fantastic!

    absolutely great. i saw this and Eve is played very realisticly, the scheming girl who snatches Margo's coveted title of 'mega star'. its obvious at the end that title will soon be taken from Eve by another poor girl, Phoebe.

    Bette Davis is the Queen

    I first saw All About Eve when I was about thirteen, now at thirty-one it's still one of my favorite movies of all time. Bette Davis is the best actress to ever grace a screen and yes she was robbed of her Oscar. When Anne Baxter apologized for not taking herself out of the running (they were both nominated for Best Actress) she said 'I was wrong, I should have dropped out'..Bette replied..'Yes dear, you should have'. Is that the diva to beat all divas or what!

    Best lines ever!

    As a 17-year old, it may be surprising to people when I tell them my favorite movie is ''All About Eve.'' Without a doubt, this film is the most well-written I have ever seen, with dialogue that snaps and crackles the entire way through. Bette Davis is exceptional, giving the performance of her career (she was completely robbed of the Oscar). Anne Baxter is sensational as the conniving Eve, and George Sanders gives a cynical and enjoyable performance and theatre critic Addison DeWitt. Overall, an incredible movie, both both parents and their children.

    Truly a Masterpiece

    This is certainly an all-time classic. At a time when her career was taking a down-turn, Bette Davis gives a commanding performance (too bad that she lost the Oscar that year). Ann Baxter is great as the conniving Eve. Marilyn Monroe's performance, though brief, certainly foreshadows what is in store for her in real life.
