Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
The 1972-73 season of the history-making situation comedy All in the Family continued executive producer Norman Lear's hot streak, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for the third consecutive time. The winning character formula of Archie Carroll O'Connor, Edith Jean Stapleton, Gloria Sally Struthers, and Mike Rob Reiner remained in place for this 24-episode third season, and issues such as gun control, women's liberation, and racism were tackled with typical forthrightness. The topic of rape is the focus of the harrowing episode "Gloria, the Victim," wherein Gloria agonizes over whether or not to report an attempted rape. Hate crimes are the topic of the day when someone paints a swastika on the Bunkers' door in "Archie Is Branded." Of course, All in the Family is a comedy, and lighthearted episodes can be found as well, including the two-part fan favorite "Flashback: Mike and Gloria's Wedding," which recounts the hassles Archie had with Mike's uncle before the ceremony. There are also plenty of laughs in "Oh Say Can You See," wherein a reunion with younger-looking chums from high school leaves Archie feeling his age. And in "The Bunkers and the Swingers," the Emmy-winning episode that is perhaps the season's best half hour, Edith answers a newspaper ad placed by a married couple, only to discover that they are interested in wife swapping.

    Sony should be ashamed

I feel so fortunate that I purchased All In The Family when it was first released in superior packaging. While this review is not a reflection on this groundbreaking show, which crossed over every boundary possible, what sony have done when it re-packaged this series is nothing short of criminal! Three DVD's stacked on top of each other is not only cheap and nasty, but there is now a risk of scratching. The same can be said for season three of Barney Miller (compare the superiour packaging of season two and you will know what I am getting at). A big disappointment! If Sony continues along this path, then I will refuse to be ripped off! It's such a shame that these classic shows, which many of us grew up with, are given such poor treatment.
