Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This BBC comedy series set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II was a huge success overseas, thanks to its unending supply of bawdy badinage and farcical situations. Begun as a spoof of a serious WWII drama, 'Allo 'Allo took on a life of its own, breaking from the traditional sitcom format to become a serialized romp with extended and absurdly complicated plotlines. The six episodes of the 1986-87 season revolve around a stolen Van Clomp painting, The Fallen Madonna, which is spirited away and hidden by Herr Flick (Richard Gibson) in a knockwurst subsequently "kidnapped" by the Communist Resistance and held for ransom. Randy restaurateur René Artois (series star Gorden Kaye) is assigned to give the 800,000-franc ransom to the Communists while Colonel Von Strohm (Richard Marner) and Captain Geering (Sam Kelly) wait in disguise. Nothing goes according to plan, of course, and Gruber (Guy Siner) winds up with the sausage, which is subsequently passed to Maria (Francesca Gonshaw). She is captured and imprisoned in a local château, which figures prominently in "The Sausage in the Wardrobe," this season's funniest episode and the all-time favorite of many fans. In the best tradition of farce, the multiple schemers make ample use of the château's secret passages; people fly in and out of them in various attempts to grab the knockwurst, now stored in a general's wardrobe. Yvette (Vicki Michelle), one of René's saucy waitresses, turns to streetwalking in an attempt to raise extra money, as the hidden British airmen wait for the Resistance members to spirit them out of town and back into a prisoner-of-war camp. The third season ends with a hilarious episode that finds the airmen disguised as prostitutes and the café crew disguised as other POWs -- and all of them trapped inside the camp after the underground tunnel collapses. To those who haven't seen previous seasons, the shows in this box set will be difficult to follow. But viewers already familiar with 'Allo 'Allo will love these fast-paced episodes, some of which just might be the series' best.
