Overview

Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman) directed this comedy about two hapless explorers -- hard-drinking trapper Bartholomew Hunt (the late Chris Farley in his last major role) and foppish Leslie Edwards (Matthew Perry) -- who lead an ill-fated 1804 expedition through the Pacific Northwest in a hopeless, doomed effort to reach the Pacific Ocean before Lewis and Clark. Others joining their trek are French linguist Guy Fontenot (Eugene Levy), who is unable to decipher dialects of any Native American tribes; Spanish conquistador Hidalgo (Kevin Dunn), who seeks the Fountain of Youth; Fontenot's Indian mistress Shaquinna (Lisa Barbuscia); Bidwell (David Packer), who keeps losing parts of his body; oddball Pratt (Hamilton Camp); and Edwards' manservant Jonah (Bokeem Woodbine). Filmed on location in Northern California and the Big Bear region.

Hadn't seen this in years, except that scene with an eagle. Anyway, this does have its moments.

While this movie is definitely not in the same league as Guest's classics, it's still very funny. Farley did an outstanding job.

I first found out about this movie a few months ago when it aired on CW. It's really a thrill that's full of amusing moments. Two explorers named Bartholomew Hunt (Chris Farley) and Leslie Edwards (Matthew Perry), among and along with several, other allies, are in a competition of sorts against Lewis and Clark, as they, too, go on an expedition. In fact, that's the basis of this 19th century story, Hunt and Edwards are the counterparts (and rivals) of Lewis and Clark. This is a fun spin on what could've nearly been historically had the former duo's group beaten the latter duo's group to the punch. The meeting between comedy and history results in what makes for a much more engaging and compelling subject matter. As the late, former SNL alumnus Farley's grand finale of his film performances, it's a fine outing. One of the highlights for me and amongst my favorite parts is when Bart gets carried away by an eagle before falling into the ocean (or was it the sand dune/beach? I'm not sure). For those who aren't very into crude humor, that variety here I'd say is few and far between, so y'all should still give this feature a chance anyway if y'all can get past those few moments, if y'all haven't seen it already. I think I've seen some or most of Farley's films and I haven't settled on a favorite (or even a most and least) yet. And he did it again, having another hit with this one. This comical adventure flick is a rollicking, grand old time y'all will neither regret nor forget.
