Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
February 14th is rolling around, and a young chipmunk's fancy turns to the Valentine's Day Ball. But a love-scarred Alvin (acting somewhat out of character) is afraid to ask Chipette Brittany to the dance for fear of rejection. Simon makes Alvin a sleep-time motivational tape to build his confidence. The tape transforms him into the sleepwalking Captain Chipmunk, a dashing, masked Casanova who sweeps the unwitting Brittany off her feet. But Alvin has no memory of this in the morning, and after getting up the nerve to ask Brittany to be his date, he is crushed when she tells him she is going to the dance with the Captain. Not to worry; all is sorted out in time for the couple to be crowned King and Queen. This collection also contains three stories from the late-1980s' DIC incarnation of Alvin and the Chipmunks. In "Dear Diary," a "diary war" escalates between the Chipettes when they read each other's journals. In "Dr. Simon and Mr. Heartthrob," Simon is transformed, Nutty Professor-style, into a lady chipmunk. The Chipmunks' classic novelty hit, "Witch Doctor," enlivens "Theodore and Juliet," in which a misunderstanding causes the object of Theodore's affections to fall instead for Alvin. These matters of the heart seem a bit mature for the target audience, but those who love the helium-voiced Chipmunks will find this sampler a fun way to get into the Valentine's Day spirit.
