Overview

With a total coverage of 2.7 million square miles and the presence of the most exotic flora and fauna on Earth, the Amazon region carries an exotic aura that delights even the most seasoned adventurers, but it also encompasses unspeakable danger. Centuries-old explorers were all too familiar with this dark side of the region, and many lost their lives to it. More recently, the Amazon caused insurmountable problems for adventurers and entrepreneurs who hoped to conquer the territory or use it to their advantage. The History Channel special Amazon Adventures hones in on several such examples, via detailed, harrowing first-person accounts, and contemporary on-location footage shot where the events occurred. This documentary recounts such Amazon adventures as that of Teddy Roosevelt, who trekked off to the Amazon after losing the presidential bid, and nearly lost his life during the journey; and Henry Ford, who made a foolish and ham-handed attempt to set up a rubber-producing operation deep in the Amazon jungle, but lost untold amounts of time and money in the process.
