Overview

Miramax Pictures has earned a reputation for distributing some of the best international art films in the United States, and this box set of four of their most acclaimed releases -- Amélie, Like Water for Chocolate, Il Postino, and Chocolat -- shows they also know how to handle their material on DVD. All four films have been given letterboxed transfers to disc; Amélie has been transferred at the aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and has been enhanced for 16 x 9 playback on anamorphic monitors. Amélie's French-language audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, with optional subtitles in French and Spanish. Bonus material includes trailers and television spots, interviews with the cast and crew, audition reels, storyboards and production art, and more. Chocolat is letterboxed at 1.85:1, and has also been enhanced for widescreen televisions. The original English-language audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a dubbed French track is in Dolby Digital Stereo. The disc also features subtitles in Spanish, and closed captions in English. Bonus materials include a commentary track from director Lasse Hallström and his producers, deleted scenes, a look at the film's costume and set designs, and a documentary on the making of the film. Il Postino is letterboxed at 1.66:1, and features both Italian and French-language soundtracks in Dolby Digital Surround, as well as English subtitles. Bonus material includes a commentary track from director Michael Radford, trailers and TV spots for the film, and a documentary on the poetry of Pablo Neruda. And finally, Like Water for Chocolate gets a relatively simple presentation; the image is letterboxed at 1.85:1, both audio tracks (the original Spanish and a dubbed English version) are in Dolby Digital Stereo, and English-language subtitles are available, with no additional bonus material.
