This is the WORST DVD Set EVER

This DVD set is a waste of the plastic it took to make it. I learned more in Mrs White's 6th grade Social Studies class - and I finished that class in 1969! There was nothing even approaching educational or informative. The producers were obviously impressed with the low-budget special effects - they kept playing those same scenes over and over again. The real sad thing is that somewhere, someone's mother is bragging to all her friends that her son/daughter made this crap. I wonder if she actually saw it before she started bragging. Save your money and 8 hours of your life that you'll never get back. Buy the Buffy the Vampire Slayers DVDs - at least you'll get a good laugh! This DVD should come with a warning label. It's that bad.

Good but loses credibility due to celebrity commentaries.

I bought this DVD for my husband who loves history. Although it is a good documentary, it is not a great one. If you want to feel good or have a sense of pride in your country, this will do that. It covers the main events that helped shape our country. Granted, not everything could be covered in depth but at least events and time lines were mentioned.

However, for both of us, this documentary loses a lot of credibility when you have celebrity commentaries. People such as: Michael Douglas, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Tim Gunn, and Michael Strahan are to name some of the celebrities to comment on America's history. Now, I don't know about you but in my opinion, these people are not historians or researchers on the topcis covered. Instead, knowing the political standings of these individuals makes this documentary seem more liberal than historican and unbiased.

Would I buy this for anyone else? No. Would I show this in a classroom studing American History? No. Would I recommend this? No.

Should be retitled : The SUMMARIZED Story of Us - still worth the watch!

First, remember this was a made for TV series ..not a big budgets with fancy effects etc.. (Like most of those SyFy made for TV movies) But this show was trying to put ALLOT of information in one small miniseries. They show what they considered important turning points - then even summarize and generalize those things deemed so important to mention. Keep in mind once again, they were trying to tell the ENTIRE history of how America was founded all the way to the present with a limited show. I feel they should have made the series longer and left some details out... For example going into extreme detail why civil war bullets did so much damage (??) Ok, tell us and move on.. Overall I would definately recomend it if you want top get a basic feel for the history of our country and how it was founded and some key people who helped shape it. Just keep in mind, it is a VERY general summary of our history.

NOT Recommended! - shame on the History Channel!

I was so looking forward to enjoying this - I bought several copies to send around & now I am going to just ditch them. Yes, it is beautifully filmed and narrated. Yes, there is some of the same material taught in school [I won't debate the accuracy....] But the title is so gross misleading as to be delusional, and the promotion of this series appears to have been deliberately designed to hoodwink the misinformed. It is one of the most one-sided pieces of claptrap propaganda that it has ever been my misfortune to observe. This is not the story of "US"; rather, this is the story as Negro America sees it. I have no problem with seeing another viewpoint of history - after all, we are a melting pot & everyone has a different view - but this series should have been more accurately presented & more honesty promoted. (I mean really - AL SHARPTON & Professor GATES??? Why not add Louis Farrakhan into the mix?!) If you want to see this, then I suggest you read Mein Kampf, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and any of Solzhenitsyn's early books first. Make sure you know your history BEFORE watching this - because this DVD will be as accurate as any other piece of modern PROPAGANDA out there. I cannot recommend this DVD for anything more than another well-shot movie that you must take with about a pound of salt.

    Excellent

My colleagues and I use this series in our 8th grade American History classes. We show short clips sandwiched in between readings and the students love it. They are always disappointed when the clip ends.
This has our tech savvy students engaged in their learning. Th e negative review must have a personal vendetta towards this product. I notice they are anonymous. C. Kruger
