Overview

John Hays Hammond's home is one of those that A&E chose to include in this salute to some of America's more eccentric wealthy citizens. A brilliant inventor, Hammond had his home in Gloucester, MA, built with tower galleries, a room for displaying many of his most ingenious inventions, and a Renaissance dining room. Equally unusual was Henry Chapman Mercer, who passed away in 1930. He was an archeologist who developed a passion for pottery and other crafts later in life. Mercer's Fonthill Castle features 18 fireplaces, five ornate bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and its own Otis elevator. Additional time is spent showing viewers around the impressive estate built by wealthy financier Otto H. Kahn that was modeled after several elegant French homes.
