An American Christmas CarolDirector: Eric Till, Henry Winkler
Made up to look like a septuagenarian, Henry Winkler plays Benedict Slade, a Scrooge-like miser living in a tiny New England town during the Depression. Slade goes Scrooge one further by repossessing items from a poor farm couple and an orphanage on Christmas eve. While reading a copy of Dickens' The Christmas Carol in his home, Slade is visited by his own set of Spirits Past, Present and Future, including his Hell-dwelling late business partner (Kenneth Pogue). Lensed in Canada, this made-for-TV film premiered the week before Christmas of 1979.

A true masterpiece. It takes the popular story and updates it into a piece of Americana. Henry Winkler is far underrated as an actor and THIS is the role that will live on and on. A very moving movie. In my home (and I'm sure many others) it's one of those movies that is viewed EVERY year right before Christmas......along with 'It's A Wonderful Life', 'A Christmas Story', etc......because it's a CLASSIC!
This Americanized version of the Christmas Carol is one of my favorite films. Although the story is one familiar to millions, Henry Winkler's acting, the photography and the atmosphere mark it as a film every buff should have in the home collection. Increasingly rare to find - this is a golden opportunity to add it to your collection. I looked long and hard to find it.
I first saw this movie as a child, and have always had fond memories of it. Winkler plays a scrooge like character that is visited by three spirits, each one with a message. This classic tale has been told so many times it is hard to pick a favorite. But if I had to pick one this would be it. Enjoy and Merry Chistmas!!
I like Henry Winkler, I always liked him as Fonz on Happy Days and I happen to be a big fan of the Christmas Carol movies as well as liking the book they were based on but honestly I thought that American Christmas Carol was okay but not great. It is kind of boring compared to other Christmas Carol movies and I have seen other Americanized versions that I liked better.
This version of the christmas carol story is one of the best, it is very appealing and the first time I saw it I just loved it.
I first saw this many years ago when I was a child and I loved it. My husband also agrees that it is the best version of the story. Every Christmas season I look forward to seeing it again!
A good version of A Chtristmas Carol
