I have a fairly extensive collection of older movies and prefer their quality and style over most of the new movies that are being released. I must say that this movie is an exception for me - it is truly enjoyable and definitely in a class above the rest. The actors and actresses are all excellent and the costumes and settings are beautifully done. The plot line is very simple and easy to follow with lots of humor and intelligence. The script is romantic but not corny or trite. The cast all seem to be connected with their roles and it is not overdone or phony. A truly light-hearted yet interesting movie to watch.

This period piece is based on an Oscar Wilde play set in the late 1800's. The plot revolves around whether a government minister (Northam), an honorable man with a secret in his past, will succumb to blackmail. The suspense is beautifully maintained. There are several intriguing subplots, and best of all, the "Ideal Husband" proves to be the person one would least expect.
The cast is wonderful. How can you go wrong with Jeremy Northam, Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver, Julianne Moore and Rupert Everett all in the same movie?? Moore makes a delightful schemer, and Rupert Everett is a charming, apparently self-absorbed ne'er-do-well nobleman. Their verbal duels are a highlight in a film full of wonderful witty dialogue.
This is not for women only. My husband and my kids, now in their 20's, all really enjoy this movie -- and still periodically pull it out for the pleasure of watching it once again.

English period piece more reminiscent of classic Noel Coward stage comedies. The dialog between Rupert Everett and Minnie Driver is fast paced and very dry. This movie doesnt look down upon the viewer, but instead expects the viewer to have the intelligence to find the subtleties in the comedy
