Overview

Richard Gere plays Zack Mayo, an aloof, taciturn man who aspires to be a navy pilot. Once he's arrived at training camp for his 13-week officer's course, Mayo runs afoul of abrasive, no-nonsense drill sergeant Emil Foley Louis Gossett Jr.. Mayo --or "Mayonnaise," as he is dubbed by the irascible Foley -- is an excellent cadet, but a little cold around the heart. Foley rides Mayo mercilessly, sensing that the young man would be prime officer material if he weren't so self-involved. Zack's affair with working girl Paula Pokrifi Debra Winger is likewise compromised by his unwillingness to give of himself. Only after Mayo's best friend Sid Worsley David Keith commits suicide over an unhappy romance does Zack come out of his shell and mature into a real human being. Take away the R-rated dialogue and the sex scenes, and Officer and a Gentleman could have been a 1937 MGM flick, maybe with Robert Taylor as Zack, Wallace Beery as Foley, and Jimmy Stewart as Sid. An Officer and a Gentleman was nominated for 7 Oscars, with wins to Gossett and to the hit song "Up Where We Belong." The closing scene has surely become a classic of movie romance.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
An odd film that succeeds despite its abundance of flaws, this romantic drama coasts on the appeal of its first-rate cast, who seem to play the roles for all their worth, even though the script sometimes feels as if it has festered in mothballs for ages. An Officer and a Gentleman is never truly surprising and follows an expected pattern, but as a routine entertainment, it suffices. Richard Gere has one of his best early roles here, and the film wisely uses his sometimes cocky demeanor to good effect, while Debra Winger's considerable acting skills make her part far more than the standard girlfriend role that was probably intended. Louis Gossett Jr. won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a fierce drill sergeant, as did the film's hugely popular theme song, "Up Where We Belong," sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.

    Awesome Movie

This is a very inspiring movie and shows of a man will power to accomplish his dreams of becoming someone he could be proud of as well as others. I have watched it over and over again and every time it plays on tv.

    Heartlifting

Not only a chick flick, I know a lot of men who love this movie. It's got the military and gore for the guys, and love and romance for the ladies. This was the very first video I ever bought, and I still watch it. It's one of my all time favorites.

    A Quality Romance Film

Richard Gere gears up as he undergoes some of the most rigorous training in our armed forces because "he's got nobody" while he proves to be a chivilarious lover and marries Debra Winger. Awh! A classic for the romance genre!

    Classic Romance

An all-time favorite chick-flick! The closing scene will have you standing up and cheering with tissue box in hand. A romance movie with a good plot - rare to find.
