Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Mike Cummings
Almost everyone knows the heartbreaking story of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl condemned to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp after she and her family spent two years in an Amsterdam attic hiding from the Nazis. The extraordinary book she wrote while in hiding, called Het Achterhuis (The Diary of a Young Girl), recorded her poignant and incredibly wise observations about life. Anne Frank tells her story, beginning in 1939, when she is a happy schoolgirl bursting with dreams. Later, the Nazi occupation of Holland changes everything. The film builds suspense gradually, showing the fingerprinting of Anne and her father, the beating of Jews by Nazi supporters, the tedium of daily life in the attic, and the appearance of a snooping Nazi collaborator in the employ of the business operated by the non-Jews who supply the attic dwellers -- the Franks and several other Jews -- with food and medicine. During the day, Anne gazes longingly out the window at life below -- people strolling, riding bicycles, pushing baby carriages. At night, Anne and the others huddle in terror as allied planes bomb the city or Nazi patrols round up Jews on the streets below. The entire cast performs with distinction, in particular, Ben Kingsley as soft-spoken Otto Frank and Hannah Taylor-Gordon -- a spindly slip of a girl with dark eyes and a winsome smile -- as Anne. To heighten the sense of realism, the cinematographers show archival film snippets of wartime Amsterdam. When the camera's vantage point shifts, actors and extras take the places of the real people. Then color gradually infuses the black-and-white images. The production follows the fate of the Franks to the very end.

    I Also Recommend:

    Anne Frank: The Whole Story.

Wow. This girl is amazing. This movie has given more insight into Anne Frank's life then any other movie. What I really love about it is, they go into her life before she went into hiding, when she was in hiding, and her life in the concentration camps, and they don't hold back. I seriously cried the first time i watched this movie as you too will probably when you watch it. I also love at the end of the movie they tell you what happened to everybody involved, (in real life) what happened and what became of them. Only being in sixth grade, this was highly amazing and i recommend it too everybody, who actually cares about the past.

Anne Frank: The Life of the Secret Annexe

I am a seventh grader in a small town in California. We don't have much to do with many wars. I certainly would not want to have to do with wars. I, however, am learning as much as I can about the Holocaust and Anne Frank. I first heard about Anne and her diary three years ago, in my language text. I thought, like everyone else: ahh, who cares? This girl died a long time ago. What's so special? I found out more: not just Anne, but millions of Jewish people. Not a long time ago, but just over 50 years. I realized that this wasn't just nothing. I became hooked, even if none of my friends were. I looked at everything I could find about Anne Frank, her friends, and the Jews in Germany, Poland, Hungary, France, and other places at the time of World War II. I found this DVD, and watched it as soon as it arrived at my front door. It is impossible to not cry in the course of this movie. I wish I could have saved Anne Frank and helped the six million Jews that perished at the hands of the Nazis.

    Amazing Movie

I saw this movie for the first time on tv when i was in the 6th grade, and I was just amazed. I can't describe how moving it is. Now as a high school sophmore I still enjoy watching the movie a lot and no matter how many times I see it, I still cry every time. Anne Frank was a truly amazing girl and it's important that her story live on.

What an amazing tribute to Anne's story!!

It was such a wonderful movie, so true to life and keeping its audience focused. I often have difficulty concentrating on a movie and i never cry but not with this one. I cried like a baby and I was glued to the screen the entire time. Awesome job bringing Anne Frank to life!!! Hannah Taylor Gordan and Jessica Manley were absolutely fantastic! Two thumbs up

Moving and tragic, a young girl's life cut short

When I was in 8th grade, I fell in love with the story of Anne Frank. When this movie came on tv in 2000, I taped it. Then I borrowed it from a friend who had the DVD. Now, it is my comfort movie, I watch it whenever I can. Even though I've read the Diary, and I know what is going to happen, I still cry no matter what.

    so dramatic

When I first saw it was in the 5th grade. And the movie just broke my heart. Because of a special person who went through that, and since its a true story. After I saw it just taught me to be appreciative.

    Great for English Class

I use the video as a supplement to the Anne Frank documentary (the one narrated by Glen Close). My students thoroughly enjoy this combination of videos.
