Overview

It is 1945 and Anne Shirley (Barbara Hershey) now a successful middle-aged writer, has returned to Prince Edward Island for an extended visit. On a whim, she agrees to write a play for a theatre producer. The play, she reasons, will keep her busy -- at least busy enough to not go out of her mind with worry about her only son who has yet to return from the war overseas. But a long-hidden secret in the form of a letter from her errant father, discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables, provides a distraction of its own. As Anne struggles to complete the play, she delves into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived as an orphan at the Green Gables farmhouse. She is forced to confront the fact that she made up stories about her life; after her mother died and when her father deserted his young daughter. During that time, Young Anne (newcomer Hannah Endicott-Douglas), is taken into the care of a wealthy matriarch, Amelia Thomas (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter-in-law, Louisa (Rachel Blanchard), which changes her life forever. Anne finally reveals the astonishing truth about her father, the origins of her quest for kindred spirits and the roots to her brilliant imagination.

Am I allowed to write a review if I haven't actually seen the movie? All I had to do was read the editorial review to make me want to jump out my skin. As if Sullivan hadn't done quite enough with "Anne of GG, the Continuing Story," a story which he completely made up, this new abomination really "beats all" (as Marilla would say). Anne's father abandoned her? She finds his letter at Green Gables??? Did Sullivan even READ the novels written by Lucy Maud Mongtomery??? Of course, it figures that in this version her SON is fighting in WWII, since in the Continuing Story Sullivan conveniently sent Anne herself (and Gilbert) to WWI, even though in the novels it is her son who fights in WWI. I'm sure this one will be just as full of ingtrigue and espionage, just as the Continuing Story was. I guess that being a beloved classic novel just isn't good enough anymore. We have to jam pack the movies with extra "fluff" to make them worth watching... uh, no thanks. I'll stick w/ Anne of GG and Anne of GG, the Sequel, which Sullivan filmed BEFORE he decided to sell out.

How could Barbara Hershey, or for that matter, how could anyone by Megan Follows play the part of Anne. What an abombanation. For shame, mr. sullivan.
