    Wonderful

Kiri Te Kanawa masters yet another Strauss role. She's so natural on stage, she plays Arabella very well, and her voice is luscious. Wolfgang Brendel has great control of his warm voice, and he gets Mandryka's dignified manner right. You could hardly ask for more in their final duet. Marie McLaughlin and David Kuebler do almost as well as Zdenka and Matteo. I was surprised at how well Donald McIntyre makes a buffo out of Graf Waldner. At first I didn't like Natalie Dessay's Fiakermilli, but then I realized I've never liked anyone in this role, so I think my problem is with the role, not the singer. You get the usual wonderful Met sets and costumes, and the orchestra always does well with Strauss' music. The picture and sound are excellent, and subtitles are in 4 languages. I hope the Capriccio with Te Kanawa comes out on DVD soon.
