Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
Despite the occasionally weak mainstream effort like For the Love of the Game, maverick director Sam Raimi still holds a special place in the hearts of cult film fans. This third installment in Raimi's anarchic Evil Dead series finds the always-mugging discount store employee Ash Bruce Campbell hurled back into the Middle Ages, where he mistakenly opens the legendary Necronomicon and releases the titular Army of Darkness -- several divisions of bloodthirsty skeletons. While Raimi's typically frenetic camera work is toned down here, the movie is rife with quick-witted comedy, bizarre anachronisms, and surefire catchphrases, such as "Give me some sugar, baby!" And Campbell's Ash, even in these strange environs, remains a bumbling if effective one-armed warrior.
All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
An excellent tongue-in-cheek horror film that's loosely a sequel to the cult favorite Evil Dead pictures, this larger budgeted follow-up fails to capitalize as well as it might have on its delightful high-concept premise. That's a criticism targeted strictly to non-horror buffs, however; true genre fans probably won't even notice, given the accepted paucity of intelligent plotting in most horror outings. Besides, an abundance of dandy dialogue, pop cultural references, and imaginative action sequences nearly enough makes up for a story that occasionally disappoints. Bruce Campbell returns in the role of the heroic Ash, a part that the actor performs once again with panache, reminding his followers and non-fans alike what a shame it is that the likable, square-jawed B-movie impresario hasn't been elevated to A-list leading man status as of yet. Director Sam Raimi takes it a little easier on the stylish camera work, seamlessly blending the visuals into his story telling, maturing as a filmmaker, but still a gleeful enough fan himself to inject some stop-motion critters straight from the Ray Harryhausen school of special effects. The film's other credits are impressive: music from the great Danny Elfman and a supporting cast that includes classy actress Embeth Davidtz of Schindler's List (1993), of all people. It's not for everyone but for the heavy metal-rock & roll-loving, horror movie-devoted populace, Army of Darkness (1993) will satisfy their jonesing for a good cinematic time.

"YOU SEE THIS, THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK!"

THE NEXT ONE OF YOU PRIMATES, EVEN TOUCHES ME....Bruce and Sam together have to be the funniest filmmakers. This movie is such a classic, no matter how many times I've see it, I can still watch it over and over again!

The Best use of the word 'Groovy' I have ever heard

An absolutely brilliant film! I am a freshman in high-school and my friend and I made a deal that we should each see three classic movies. One of them on my list was 'Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness' and I was literally amazed! So idiotic and stupid, an absolute work of pure genius! Go see it, and you'll know exactly what I mean. This is the hilarious embodiment of the 80's in one classic film! At times I was laughing so hard I was nearly crying. When watching this movie, you can tell the people who made it were trying to be very serious, but then after the first ten... no, five minutes said 'Screw it'. You'll love it.

    Get the Theatrical Verison

The other version is better than this one. The director's cut ending is no ending at all. There is a reason why this was not the one released at first. Even the director's commentary on the other CD says this one sucks. ''You're goody little two shoes'' Get the other version, leave this one in the warehouse.

Horror, Humor... HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

This version of The Army of Darkness is extended with never seen before footage. Great features and excellent audio commentary by Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. A must buy for all Evil Dead fans. One negative comment - some scenes are of poor quality because it's new extended version had to be dug out of who-knows-where; also, the ending for this is the post ''dooms day'' ending, and the S-Mart ''Hail to the King Baby'' ending is not included. Over all - Get all the copies! Why not! It's well worth the buy!

    Why You need this movie

You need this for the simple fact that Raimi and Campbell do a commentary that is awesome. Death to the Deadites!
