Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
One of Britain's most popular sitcoms, As Time Goes By is built on the adoring and warring romantic union between one of her majesty's thespian jewels -- Dame Judi Dench -- and the wonderfully underrated Geoffrey Palmer. Since its premiere in 1992, the series has received a groundswell of support on both sides of the pond, building its following with a rare blend of charm and nuanced humor. The series revolves around the star-crossed Jean Pargeter Dench and Lionel Hardcastle Palmer, lovers during the Korean War who were separated by a twist of fate and reunited 38 years later. The highlight of the fifth season is the dramatic meeting between Lionel and his ex-wife Margaret which Jean reluctantly agrees to attend. Dench and the marvelously deadpan Palmer are at the height of their powers, flashing a chemistry that recent American sitcoms would do well to study. Amid a sea of television driven by the need for near-constant laughter, As Time Goes By has carved a niche by doing something nearly unheard of -- revealing quirky humor in a subtle, natural pace, instead of rushing from one obvious punchline to the next. This 3 1/2 hour DVD includes all 7 episodes from the show's fifth season, plus bloopers and excerpts from Dench's tribute at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

England's Best Series-As Time Goes By

Havewatched this series on television since the onset of it, and just wish it were on every night, even though I've seen most of them I could watch them over and over again. Just a delightful fun filled, romantic story, leaving me with a feeling of having the joy of knowing there is decent and wonderful television out there.
