Overview

This sweet-natured British situation comedy proved beyond doubt that there is no statute of limitations on romance. Army officer Lionel Hardcastle Geoffrey Palmer and nurse Jean Parteger Judi Dench lost touch with one another after their brief affair in 1953. Flash-forward to 1991. Now an author of musty geographical books, Lionel was unexpectedly reunited with Jean, who had gone into business for herself as the owner of a secretarial service. It took some doing, but the caustic, imperious Lionel and the rigid, immutable Jean finally realized that they'd known one another in the Biblical sense way back when. It also took some doing for these two diametrical opposites to admit that they were still passionately in love, In the course of As Time Goes By's nine seasons, two other romances transpired: One involved Jean's daughter Judith Moira Brooker and Lionel's publisher Alistair Philip Bretherton; the other, which didn't really take off until the series had practically run its course, involved Jean's employee Sandy Jenny Funnell and a police officer named Harry David Michaels. Also in the cast were Frank Middlemass as Lionel's boisterous father Rocky and Joan Sims as Rocky's new bride Madge. Weighing in at 65 episodes, As Time Goes By originally aired on the BBC from 1992 to 2002 and has since been seen in the United States courtesy of PBS.

    Best Valentines present!!!

We have attempted to watch As Time Goes By on our local PBS station for a number of years now and have always enjoyed the program when we had the opportunity to watch it. NOW, we have the complete original series and can sit down to watch every enjoyable scene. We find ourselves laughing at and with many of the characters as they live out their lives. It has been one of the most enjoyable Valentines presents we have every bought for each other.

    I adore it...

I've watched the show on PBS and BBC America and I just fell in love with the series. It's funny but not in the forceful way and it's romantic but not done in an overkill type of way and the rest of the cast are wonderful with their little odd behaviors and such. Lionel is the stogy ‘let things happen as they go and I don’t want to get in the middle’ type of person while Jean wants to meddle in everything, especially Judy and Sandy’s love life. Jean’s sister and brother-in-law are absolute nutters and play them perfectly and Alistair plays the womanizer in a funny and dorkish way instead of a slimy way. This show is perfect for just sitting down when you need a break and getting lost in their little lives.

    HILARIOUS AND HEARTWARMING!

My favorite series of all time. "Lionel" and "Allistair" are perfect as they play off each other. "Jean" and others are so warm and endearing. I watch this series over and over and never tire of it. They are like family to me.

    Like Warm and Witty Friends

As time Goes By is by far the best romance series to date…bar none. It has warmth, humor, the traditional dry British wit and romance. The romance is not portrayed in the typical sticky sweet you often encounter, but rather in an evergreen view with believable humanistic traits. Even though I have seen this complete series many times, I still on occasion pull out the set like an old friend and am always discovering something new. You will not be disappointed when you get this series – it is a classic – it is a keeper.

As Time Goes By - The Complete Original Series

I was very pleased to be able to order this DVD series. It is one of our favorite TV shows, and I am glad to be able to own it in case our public television station stops playing it. It was wonderful to find it on the Barnes & Noble website. Schnauzer-Mom

Light and delightful gentle Brit humor at its best.

Dame Judy Dench and her unflappable Lionel are gentle and romantic real world lovers. This light fare will put a smile on your face and keep it there. Who doesn't know this couple, your mom and dad, your grands or the lovely couple next door. The curmudgeon and his smart and sassy first love. You will love every minute of it.

    YOU WILL LOVE THIS SERIES!

You'll fall in love with this relaxing and entertaining series. The characters are realistic, intelligent, charming, and complex. The writing is fabulous! Add to that, fantastic, acclaimed actors and you have a recipe for success. No wonder it's my favorite British comedy!

I haven't had the chance to watch any of the shows yet even thou

I haven't had the chance to watch any of the shows yet even though I have wanted to simply because the shows looked interesting to me, but I hadn't watched any of the shows and didn't want to start in the middle of the series. Now I have the opportunity to watch the series from the beginning and at my own pace any day of the week
