Ashes of Time

Overview

Ashes of Time is an early masterpiece from director Wong Kar-Wai. The same cannot be said for this DVD edition. The video quality is appalling; it's worse than a tenth-generation VHS tape. Grain, blurriness, and distortion lay waste to Christopher Doyle's marvelous cinematography. The presentation is also too dark and ruined by an oversaturation of color. Subtitles are placed in the massive lower black bar, which cuts off the lower part of the image; the actors' mouths are frequently obscured by the bar, as are ...

Subtitles are placed in the massive lower black bar, which cuts off the lower part of the image; the actors' mouths are frequently obscured by the bar, as are key elements in action sequences. The sound is reduced to a tinny mess with no dynamic range, as it's far too high-pitched. The subtitles are frequently awkward, suffering from a weak translation. Further, words linger on the screen far too long after the characters have spoken their dialogue. The included trailer would be a stylish treat were it not for the cheap titles and similarly horrible transfer quality. The "Scene Selections" feature is symbolic of the overall shoddy production quality; the 95-minute movie is broken into only five chapters, and "Show Start" and "End Credits" take up two of them. The menu gives access to the chapters via chapter number and title. A beautiful, poetic film by a cinematic master has been reduced to a pathetic shambles.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jonathan Crow
Combining elements of Sergio Leone and Michelangelo Antonioni, Wong Kar-wai's masterful Ashes of Time is both a lively recasting of Chinese martial art conventions and a fascinating meditation on memory. Like Wong's Chungking Express, which he shot during Ashes's famously troubled production, this film concerns a handful of lonely, isolated souls who are so absorbed in their own melancholy world that they cannot connect with others. The Blind Swordsman (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) is crippled by nostalgia for his earlier sighted days, while Huang Yaoshi (Tony Leung Ka Fai) drinks "Happy Go Lucky" and manages to blot out his memory. Also like Chungking, Ashes sets its characters amid a sterile, alienating landscape (the Gobi desert), while articulating their innermost thoughts through the groundbreaking use of multiple voice-overs. And the whole production is brought to life thanks to Christopher Doyle's gorgeous, lyrical cinematography. The all-star cast gives excellent, if enigmatic, performances. Juxtaposing hyperkinetic blurred streaks of violence with the wasteland of the desert, Ashes of Time brilliantly fuses visual poetry, a dreamlike non-linear narrative, and riveting action sequences to create one of the finest films Hong Kong has produced.

    TERRIBLE Quality DVD

Although ''Ashes of Time'' is an incredible movie, this is a terrible quality DVD. I was suspect upon looking at the packaging, and even more so upon viewing the menu page; both appeared to be quite cheap. However, I was horrified when I began to play the film. The picture appears to be a copy of a video. The audio sounds like it was taken from a condensor microphone. And, most annoyingly, the background for the subtitles is grey and cuts off the bottom part of the screen! This gives it a look of being faux ''letter-boxed'', but often causes the characters mouths to be missing. I've seen the movie a number of times in theatres, so I know that none of these problems come from the film itself. I expected better quality than something I could buy on a street corner for $5.00!
