During the bleak years of the Great Depression, American moviegoers found themselves cheered by the periodic screen pairings of former Broadway hoofer Fred Astaire and Hollywood glamour girl Ginger Rogers. Their star vehicles employed airy plots and stereotyped characters, but they were lavishly mounted in the best Art Deco tradition and peopled with first-rate supporting players. Ultimately, it was the music, dancing, and singing that so entranced ‘30s audiences. A who’s who of popular music supplied the scores for these films, including Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Dorothy Fields. And those songs! Instant hits back then, for the most part they remain standards today. “Cheek to Cheek,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” and countless others -- all of them were introduced in the films collected in this triumphant box set. Remastered for high definition and outfitted with terrific supplemental features, these five movies represent the cream of the Astaire-Rogers crop. Depending upon whom you believe, either Top Hat 1935 or Swing Time 1936 is the best film Fred and Ginger made together. The former has the edge, with its sensational Irving Berlin score and its goofy mistaken-identity plot. But Swing Time, with its beautiful songs by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, isn’t far behind. For that matter, neither are Follow the Fleet 1936 and Shall We Dance 1937. The duo’s final film, The Barkleys of Broadway 1949, made ten years after the last entry of the original series, doesn’t quite measure up to the earlier ones but is still enjoyable. These movies were intended to provide escapist entertainment, so they were deliberately crammed with absurd and implausible situations. Once the dancing began, however, the contrivances were all forgotten, and theater screens radiated a magic glow on transfixed audiences. The magic is still there, and Harry Potter himself would envy the effect that Astaire and Rogers continue to have on people who love movie musicals.

While Volume 1 in The Astaire & Rogers Collection features the best-known films of this phenomenally popular 1930s screen duo, Volume 2 showcases Fred and Ginger in five more eminently entertaining musical comedies, each boasting top-drawer production values, excellent casts, and hit songs by some of America’s greatest popular composers. Flying Down to Rio 1933 actually stars Gene Raymond and Dolores Del Rio, two largely forgotten stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, but supporting players Astaire and Rogers -- paired for the first time -- steal the show with their high-spirited stepping. Among Rio's more memorable sequences is one of the daffiest production numbers ever committed to celluloid, featuring scantily clad chorus girls riding atop old-fashioned biplanes. The Gay Divorcee 1934, the team’s first “official” starring vehicle, takes its title and premise from a Broadway smash. While only one Cole Porter tune made the jump from stage to screen, luckily it was a little ditty entitled “Night and Day.” A non-Porter song, “The Continental,” nabbed the film an Oscar for best song of the year, as well as inspiring a terrific Astaire-Rogers dance number. Another Broadway hit, Roberta 1935, was similarly refitted for Astaire and Rogers, with Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott lending marquee appeal and Jerome Kern providing a score that spawned several standards, most memorably “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Carefree 1938 has its stretches of corny comedy but also sports some nifty Irving Berlin tunes, including “Change Partners.” The last of the RKO series of Astaire-Rogers pairings, 1939’s The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, cast Fred and Ginger as the popular early-20th-century husband-and-wife dance team; heavier on plot than effervescent dance numbers, the film signaled the dissolution of a brilliant partnership. Astaire and Rogers would reunite at M-G-M in 1949 for The Barkleys of Broadway, but it’s their glorious run at RKO that ensured Hollywood immortality for the incomparable team.

    I could not wait to get my hands on this collection to examine each and every one to my heart's content. I was not disappointed. Though light on plot line, the sheer beauty of watching this magic duo do what they do best ~~ dance ~~is well worth the price. Even in black and white their magic is unmistakeable. I highly recommend it to anyone who cares to enjoy the indescrible magic these two performers brought together at a time when it was so sorely needed by the public as a welcomed form of escapism.

    Astaire and Rogers - The Complete Film Collection

    No matter what age you are this collection is testimony to the fact that 61 years after their last movie together, The Barkley's of Broadway, no dancer(s) can come close to them. The names Astaire & Rogers, or Fred & Ginger, are used as superlatives to this day as being the creme de la creme! View any of the movies in this collection and you will understand why they cannot be topped. The movies are as crystal clear as when they were first shown. The chemistry between Fred & Ginger is electric. Ginger Rogers wasn't the most technical or even the best of dancers but compare her to any of Fred's other dance partners and you will ascertain, there is no comparison. Marvelous collection!

    Great movies - wonderful dancing and songs - MISSING 5 discs from the box set when it arrived. These included Top Hat and Swing Time my favourites.

    The films are absolutely wonderful. Terrific dancing and singing and lots of fun with the regular offsiders. Good clean soundtrack and image. However FIVE discs were missing when the box arrived. I have written to B&N to get them sent. Fingers crossed.

    Classics

    If you are a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers fan, you have to love this DVD collection. And even if you haven't always been a big fan, you will love these movies. They are classics! Lots of fun and entertainment for the whole family. And you don't have to worry about bad language for the kids.

    Check your contents when ordering big DVD collections!

    I purchased this 12 disk collection as a gift. Unfortunately, when the gift was unwrapped, we only found 6 of 12 disks.
    I'm trying to get this product exchanged for the complete set!
    In other words, always check contents of your collections expecially when multiple items are supposed to be included.
    The movies are great...I just need to get them all!

    Classic pop music and dancing

    I bought these for my wife. I knew we'd watch them together, and I didn't expect to like these very much. However, I found the movies charming and highly entertaining. The plots are a little thin, if not outright ridiculous; but the interaction of Fred and Ginger is quite appealing. The supporting characters who carry over from one movie to another and the humor they bring to the movies is also quite nice. But the core of these movies is the music and dance, and that's as good as it gets. Music by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin is as good as pop music gets. Fred and Ginger dancing together are magic, whether romantic, high-energy or just for fun novelty numbers.
