Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire was a rousing, old-fashioned adventure. This produced-for-video sequel is more pedestrian, but it should excite younger thrill seekers. Bespectacled cartographer Milo Thatch (voiced by James Arnold Taylor in place of Michael J. Fox) and Queen Kida are restoring the underwater kingdom of Atlantis to its former glory. There is trouble on the surface, though, and before you can say "Hail Atlantis," Milo, Kida, and the intrepid crew from the first film venture back to terra firma to solve a series of supernatural mysteries involving a devil fish, vengeful Native American spirits, and the mythical, missing "Spear of Destiny." Along the way, Kida wrestles with whether or not to share the awesome power of Atlantis's enchanted crystals with the outside world. As with Disney's previous produced-for-video sequels, this is more kid-friendly and less intense than the original (it plays like the pilot for a possible TV series). After the muscle-bound Hercules and Tarzan, it is refreshing to see geek-hero Milo rise to the occasion using more brains than brawn. Comic relief is ably provided by the colorful crew, each voiced by the original cast members, including Don Novello as demolitions expert Vinny, Corey Burton as Mole, and Florence Stanley as the hilariously deadpan Mrs. Packard. While not as spectacular as its forerunner, this sequel does deliver fantastic moments -- including encounters with a tentacled sea monster and a pack of cantankerous sand coyotes -- that make this return to Atlantis a welcome one indeed.

Even as an avid fan of the first movie, save the fact that I don't speak Atlantean or have blue tattoos, I was highly dissapointed by this movie. The animation was terrible, the plot was disconnected, and there were so many errors I had to watch it again to count them all. But, being bound to the movie, by tradition, I do have some good to say about it all. The voice acting was great. Even though Michael J Fox wasn't in it, everyone else did a terrific job. Don Novello as Vinny was one of the things I looked forward to, actually. And, on the DVD, there's this great deleted scene. So funny! But the movie was just OK, although it was pretty high up on the scale of Disney sequels.

Good movie, but not as good as the 1st one.
