Overview

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery features both widescreen and pan-and-scan versions of the film; however, the original theatrical aspect ration of 2.35:1 has been changed by director Jay Roach to a 2:1 aspect ratio, perhaps to better accommodate its widescreen enhancement. The commentary track allows Roach and Mike Myers to tell what is improvised and what is scripted in the film, specifically to point out the different inspirations and homages, and joke around some as well. The deleted scene menu features two original endings and five scenes that were either cut for time or because they were expendable. One of the original endings is particularly hilarious and at least two of the deleted scenes ("The Henchman's Wife" and "Fendi Briefcase") could have been left in the film. The "Spy Genre Retrospective" is disappointing, just a series of pages to read about the movies that inspired the film instead of a featurette. Meanwhile, the animated "Music to Shag To" sequence, a celebrity cameo menu, and the "Swedish-Made Penis Enlarger Pump" features aren't exactly substantial but do add to the zany feel of the DVD. The theatrical trailer is also included. Austin Powers can't compete with current special editions, but it is nonetheless a fun disc for an enjoyable film.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
With its candy-colored sets and cheesy psychedelic effects, the runaway hit Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a hilarious spoof of '60s pop culture -- assorted James Bond films and Beatles movies are just a few of its targets. Star and writer Mike Myers has a blast playing the title character, a horny dork in Carnaby Street ruffles who doubles as a fashion photographer and secret agent, as well as Austin Powers's archenemy, Dr. Evil -- and his joy is infectious. After three decades in a cryogenic deep freeze, Powers time travels from 1967 Swinging London, where he's a reigning sex god, into the present to find that free love is a thing of the past. In the unforgiving 1990s it's a lot harder for a guy with bad teeth to "shag" gorgeous "birds" like Elizabeth Hurley while saving the world from a diabolical nuclear plot. But things change for bad guys too -- even Dr. Evil has to take time out from destroying the world in order to attend family counseling with his whiny son, Scott Evil. And while that's enough to make anyone nostalgic for the '60s, Austin Powers remains one of the brightest moments in '90s comedy.
All Movie Guide
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a hip, hilarious take-off of 1960s spy adventures -- such as the James Bond films or Our Man Flint -- that goes beyond mere parody. It's evident that creator Mike Myers, co-star Elizabeth Hurley, and everyone else involved seem to be having a tremendous amount of fun with the project. Myers supplies not one, but two rich comic creations: the title hero and his arch-nemesis Dr. Evil. The film's fish-out-of-water scenario could easily have been stretched much too thin; though the premise does occasionally flag, Myers peppers the film with offbeat tangents and great cameos from stars such as Tom Arnold, Carrie Fisher, and pop impresario Burt Bacharach. Austin Powers' humor is broad, to be sure, but like many broad cult comedies, the film gets better and better with repeat viewings.
