Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Peter Marchand
We can barely handle the truth: Sometimes, we're shocked by the anxiety-spiking revelation of what is really happening in our government and the in corporations that dominate our world. Other times, we're awed by documentary provocateur Michael Moore's knack for wringing humor out of uncovered malfeasance. Such is the bittersweet truth of Moore’s acclaimed Bravo documentary series, The Awful Truth. In grave danger of being best remembered as the guy whose 2003 Academy Award acceptance speech -- for the Best Documentary Feature, Bowling for Columbine -- devolved into a spirited bit of Bush-bashing, Moore's legacy is much better served in this collection. The 24 episodes in this four-disc set mix performance art, civics lessons, and social protest, all delivered with folksy sarcasm by the bestselling author of Downsize This and Stupid White Men. Moore takes on corporate giants and the U.S. government with the same irreverent bravado that propelled his hunt for GM’s CEO in 1989’s Roger and Me. Outrageous in his outrage, Moore leads a cancer-stricken Voice Box Choir to carol at Philip Morris and holds a mock funeral outside an insurance company’s corporate headquarters when they won’t pay for a customer’s life-or-death pancreas operation. He sends Crackers, the Corporate Crime-Fighting Chicken, to Disneyland to expose Mickey Mouse for possible unfair labor practices and has a street pimp show Congress how to get organized. As background to Moore's Oscar rant, we recommend the "Gulf War" piece from Season 2, in which the baseball-capped crusader sounds out Americans on their true feelings toward Saddam Hussein, Iraq, and Middle East oil. Granted, the appeal of Moore's soapbox skewering might be lost on the minority who voted for George W. Bush in 2000. But to fans on Moore's side of the spectrum, these truths are just awful, and awfully funny.
