Overview

The first season of Baa Baa Black Sheep (which was subsequently rechristened Black Sheep Squadron), starring Robert Conrad, Dana Elcar, James Whitmore Jr., John Larroquette, Robert Ginty, Dirk Blocker, and Red West, has arrived as a double-DVD set on a pair of two-sided platters. The full-screen (1.33-to-1) image on these transfers is excellent, far better than the picture this reviewer remembers seeing of the series on The History Channel. The sound is also nicely crisp and defined, and the money spent on the production can be appreciated here. Each episode has been given four chapter breaks, matching the story arc of most of the shows. The menus are easy enough to use although, as with many other Universal DVD releases, there is an annoying array of trailers that runs before the actual menu appears -- one can skip to the start-up menu easily enough, however. The only significant bonus feature comes the the NBC News archives, in the form of an interview with the real Greg Boyington, upon whose World War II exploits the series was based -- he seems far more circumspect with age than Conrad's portrayal would lead one to believe possible; it's also fascinating to see the miserable state of film-to-video transfers, in the form of clips from the pilot episode, that passed muster on network television in 1976.

    old ones still the best

it is great to be able to watch tv programes like this over and over again.
you know the ones we grew up with.i had been searching for a long time for this eries on dvd,(and was glad when i found it on your great site)it is just how i remembered it ,the plot lines simple ans easy to follow ,not like todays programes where there is twists and turns at every chance.the chacters are very easy to follow thru out the series and build up to have their own little piece of history.i know the show does not strickly stick to history but who cares it was a great getaway every week when it aired for young boys and possibly girls to dream of becoming one of the pilots some day.why then can tv producers not try today to bring this formate back it works.
