Since Boyz 'N the Hood put him on the map, John Singleton has gone as far afield from that territory as a director can, from color-blind social commentary (Higher Learning) to historical drama (Rosewood) to outright escapism (Shaft). Ten years later, he returns to the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles, but this is a kinder, gentler Singleton, one interested in relationships defined more by underlying kindness than vengeful spite, one content to stop shy of operatic tragedy. As a result, Baby Boy feels a little neutered, even if it features astute observations about the societal roles ascribed to young African-American males, as well as the regrettable dynamics that grow from them. Singleton starts by quoting a psychologist who posits that the young black man is treated (and behaves) like a baby, incapable of tapping into a higher purpose while content to languish in neediness. From here he launches into a study of one particular "baby boy," Jody (credibly played by singer Tyrese Gibson in his film debut), whose relationships with the mothers of his two children, as well as his own mother, speak volumes about his stunted growth. Jody's head-butting with his mother's new boyfriend (Ving Rhames) and a paroled thug (Snoop Dogg) showcase more of the familiar friction from Boyz, which also has its place in this world of hair-trigger machismo. Singleton is a bit too heavy-handed -- a mural-sized portrait of slain gangsta rapper Tupac Shakur watches ominously over Jody's bed -- but even in a lesser effort, he remains one of film's most talented chroniclers of underexamined lives.

    " Jody things might go a little crazy but you will always be my baby" ,

    Tyrese did a great job playing Jody as the lead character, Taraji Henson as the pressurized lover who bears Jody's baby also delivered excellent performances. She was so real and honest in her portrayal. There are so many sisters out there just like Yvette and she had delivered that role effortless. Ving "Marcellus" Rhames as a proud ex-old schooler who dates Jody's mom (watch for a very innovative stamina requiring squatting activity he and J's Mom performs...priceless) played his role naturally and convincing. Omar Gooding steals every scene he's in, he portrays Jody's cuz who's raging about his current life status, and what "lesson of life in da street." Now Snoop Dog was being Snoop Dog he appears in this film looking more evil as usual, hell, even Tupac did a cameo, sort of....

    this movie is crazy

    i loved this movie!!. every time it comes on i watch as if it was the first time i saw it. i loved every moment, my favorite part was the ending when tyrese and saraja were playing cards and they were engaged. i think that was the cutest part of the enire movie. i also love when tyrese was shirt less in the movie, just looking at his arms and chest made my knees go weak.

    I HOPE THERE IS A BABY BOY PART 2

    BABY BOY WAS A GREAT MOVIE. I HOPE TO SEE A PART 2 WITH THE SAME CAST. TYRESE GIBSON AND TARAJI P. HENESON GO GOOD TOGETHER ON SCREEN AS JODY AND YVETTE. THIS MOVIE HITS HOME FOR ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME THINGS IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP.

    THIS MOVIE IS TIGHTTTT!!!!!!

    I LIKED THIS MOVIE A LOT BECAUSE IT WAS SO REAL. THE CHARACTERS WERE GOOD AND NASTY. THE PART THAT I LIKE IS WHEN YVETTE ASKED JODI WHERE HE HAD BEEN SINCE YESTERDAY.

    Da Bomb

    Baby Boy was the best movie I ever saw. It is my favorite movie. This movie shows some of the important things about love and the thug mentelity.I also like some of the relationship scenes..It's Cold!!

    A MEANINGFUL OUTLOOK OF TODAY'S BLACK MEN

    I FEEL BABY BOY IS A MOVING MOVIE WHICH SHOW'S THE STRUGGLES OF THE GROWING YOUTH TODAY. i WAS TOUCH BY THE WAY YVETTE STAYED WITH JODY AFTER ALL HE PUT HER THOUGH, WHICH SHOWS HOW MUCH WOMEN PUT UP WITH. TYRESSE PLAYED A STRONG ROLE.
