Overview

John Hughes sticks to his seemingly fool-proof formula for success in Baby's Day Out, a cross-pollination of Home Alone and a Swee' Pea cartoon. The plot seems all-too familiar: posing as baby photographers, a group of three would-be kidnappers (led by the usually outstanding character actor Joe Pantoliano) enter an unsuspecting wealthy Chicago couple's home and make off with Baby Bink after leaving a ransom note. However, while waiting for the delivery of the ransom money, Baby Bink manages to escape and subsequently embarks on a series of cutesy-poo adventures in downtown Chicago (including a crawl through a skyscraper construction site), leaving the hapless crooks in hot pursuit.

This is one of my favorite family films from the 1990's, I used to watch it at least once a week when I was younger. What I love about the movie is the acting of the three criminals and the situations they find themselves in trying to recapture the baby. It's in the vein of films such as Dunston Checks In, Home Alone, and Blank Check, so if you like those films you will love this one also and if you enjoy funny comedic movies that kids don't have to leave the room for than you love this. The plot is simple, three not so smart criminals decide to pose as photographers to kidnap a baby for a ransom. But when you have three bumbling criminals it doesn't take long before plans begin to break now. After successfully kidnapping the baby, they allow the baby to get out and that is where the real fun begins. Pratfalls abound and so do many other hilarious hijinxs. I would definitely recommend this underrated film.

This is a really really fun movie--I'm surprised it hasn't moved to classic status for kids. Top actors like Joe Mantegna keep it from going too over the top for parents, and some of the dialogue among the crooks is priceless. Our kids have watched it probably 50 times since we got it (and they're only allowed one video a day!) Even the adults run in to watch certain scenes again and again. A great bargain if you have kids 10 and under or so.
