Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Quite possibly one of the best films ever made about arson and firefighting, Backdraft has a throwback feel and pays homage to the disaster-thriller tradition. The well-spun script keeps the viewer glued as intriguing fire detective work unfolds, and benefits additionally from the blend of Ron Howard's use of pyrotechnic special effects with some superb acting, a combination which lends glamour to the already-romanticized world of firefighting. Although the anthropomorphisizing of fire is a bit heavy-handed and the sub-plots extraneous and far-flung, Backdraft's twisting narrative is tightly wrapped and makes for some good, nailbiting entertainment. Robert De Niro and Donald Sutherland give excellent performances in their respective roles as the fire chief sleuth and the depraved arsonist, and Kurt Russell and Billy Baldwin are also solid as firefighting sibling rivals. Despite its blockbuster appeal and budget, audiences responded lukewarmly to its somewhat far-fetched concept and the result was a lackluster showing at the box office.

    The Animal

Coming from a line of fireman, I absolutely love this film and Donald Sutherland's portrayal as a pyromaniac--right on target! Firefighters are some of the toughest of this society and the most incorruptable (same thing can't be said about the police or politicans, who the latter are criminals in my book). A great tribute to these fine young men and women, especially in the light of 9/11.

    Good but not realistic

It is an exciting movie with a suspenseful plot and all that but if you're looking for a ''glimpse into the life of a real firefighting squad,'' this is not the movie for you.

    This Movie Is On Fire!

I would have to give the movie Backdraft a perfect 10! It gives a realistic glimpse into the life of a real firefighting squad. It magically mixes mystery, honor, bravery, and love into one exceptionally produced and directed 135-minute movie. Kurt Russell, Robert DeNiro, and William Baldwin are three actors who did tremendous jobs in filling the personalities of their characters. Kurt and William play two feuding brothers who work in the same fire department. William later quits and becomes Robert¿s sidekick in investigating a series of arson fires. Overall, this is a really exceptional movie and I would recommend this movie to anyone whether they are into dramas, comedies, or horrors.
