Bigger isn't always better. Case in point: Bad Boys II. On the other hand, this ample two-disc DVD set from Columbia/TriStar is nothing to complain about. The first disc, with the film, offers both picture and sound that is stunning. The 2.40:1 transfer, enhanced for widescreen televisions, is beautiful in every way. Colors are vibrant, blacks are solid, and detail is constant throughout. Director Michael Bay -- known for style over substance -- doesn't disappoint, and this digital transfer is up to the task of recreating his "vision." Equally impressive is the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, available in either English or French. Aggressive and exciting, sound alternates from speaker to speaker, both front and back, highlighting every gun shot or obligatory bass-heavy song. This is an remarkable mix, bound to take advantage of any decent sound system. While this disc is slim on extras -- only containing trailers from both Bad Boys films, S.W.A.T., Radio, The Missing, Underworld, and a handful of others -- the second disc holds the meat of the supplements, including a handful of deleted scenes and two featurettes: a short nine-minute look at the stunts and another, twice as long, on the visual effects. Both could have benefited by being more in-depth, but they're still very good. In addition, a music video from Jay-Z for "La-La-La" will appeal to his fans, but the highlight of this disc are two separate sections: the "Sequence Breakdowns," where six sections of the film are extensively studied, and a comprehensive "Production Diary," made up of 19 short, but revealing, featurettes covering just about everything, including the original Bad Boys film. Oddly enough, a Bay commentary is missing, and while his brand of filmmaking is often critically questioned, this set has everything one would expect.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The words "subtle" and "understated" aren't in the vocabularies of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay, and that point is driven home explosively in this over-the-top, hyperkinetic sequel to the wildly successful 1995 buddy movie. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as the flamboyant, rule-breaking cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, this time caught in the middle of a Miami-based drug war instigated by a ruthless, sadistic crime lord (Jordi Molla). Left to their own devices, Mike and Marcus would certainly continue to disregard proper police procedures, but there's an added ingredient in the mix: Marcus's younger sister, Sydney (Gabrielle Union), is a federal agent working undercover to smash the drug ring, and one false move by the boys will put her at risk. Director Bay, whose more memorable films for Bruckheimer include The Rock and Armageddon in addition to the first Bad Boys, has developed a winning method of producing action movies: make 'em fast, make 'em big, and make 'em loud. In this case, comedy interludes with Smith and Lawrence are used mainly to give audiences a breather between flashy fights, chases, and shootouts. The action sequences are staged, photographed, and edited to reflect Bay's larger-than-life vision, and they are so well done that even the most skeptical viewers will find themselves suspending disbelief -- even as the situations become increasingly outlandish. The Smith-Lawrence combination remains potent, Union supplies the requisite sex appeal, and character actor Joe Pantoliano contributes a scene-stealing turn as their dyspeptic superior. Bad Boys 2 is violent, profane, and improbable from first scene to last -- but it's also great fun for anybody willing to check his brain at the front door before coming in for a look.

This seemed like a different movie. Especially near the end. This got over the top. Not as good as the first. But it does have its moments though.

This movie is a variety of things including comedy, love, and action. Me personally i like all of the comedy and action in in the movie. The movie is hilarious because of the two amazingly funney actors Will Smith and Martin Lawrence who both stared on Bad Boys 1. The Ation packed in this movie is great from the gun scenes to the wild car chases, which are so well filmed. The love scenes even though i don't usually like love scenes were pretty good, and at the same time hiarious. All in all this movie is great, and if you haven't watched it yet you should and if you have watched it, you should watch it again.

This movie is 1 of my fave action movies ever. It is also 1 of the funniest movies ever. The scene with the 2 rats and inside the tv store....FUNNY AS HECK!!!! Watch this movie. The best action/comedy ever made!

This movie got a bad rap from many critics, especially those who called it a bloated waste of time. Fortunately, I am in no agreement with them on any of those words. What they never realized is that this was meant as a summer blockbuster, and you know what? It does the job. Turn up your home stereos, sit back, and rock the house

I went to watch this movie in the theatre, and it was one of the best movies I've watched this year. All the action scenes were great. I recommend everybody to go out and get this movie.

bad boys 2 is really cool. It is way better than bad boys 1. my favorite part of this movie is when this big building blows up and a truck drvies out of it. I also like it when mike started shooting at bad guys with his two rifles.

I saw the first Bad Boys movie and liked it, but it wasn't anything spectacular. This movie is absolutely hilarious. From M. Lawrence accidently ingesting Ecstasy and going to the Captain's house, to rats having sex, this movie has as many laughs as action scenes. Honestly, I thought that the movie was over 6 or 7 times, every huge action sequence could be the climax or ending in any Scwarzenegger or Stallone flick. This movie is amazing!
