Bagdad CafeDirector: Percy Adlon
This West German film is set in the California Desert. A husband-and-wife pair of Bavarian tourists become stranded when their car breaks down; after a quarrel, the wife, Marianne Sagebrecht, gathers her luggage and stalks off. She stops at the Bagdad Cafe, a fleapit truckstop run by outspoken C.C.H. Pounder, who is also having husband problems. The Cafe has become a magnet for some of truly odd character: temperamental Hispanic cook George Aguilar, tattoo artist Christine Kaufmann, and onetime Hollywood set designer Jack Palance. Despite obvious personality differences, Sagebrecht and Pounder become friends. Bagdad Cafe was later adapted into a short-lived American sitcom starring Jean Stapleton and Whoopi Goldberg.

The characters, these 2 wonderful actresses, the music, the light, the friendship...everything in this film is like a wonderful spell. A real master-piece of joy.....
Though I caught this movie by chance and it is an old movie it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, very nostalgic
I bumped into this movie on cable and could not stop once I watched the first few minutes. I love the characters the beautiful skies against the dumpy lives and the terrific character development. IT is a great movie, now it is one of my favorites and a few weeks ago i never had heard of it. People i talk to now say- oh yes- i Love that movie! But no one lists it when you ask for recommendations. it is almost a personal movie, to keep for yourself.
When I first saw this film on cable television, I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT, for my own... it truely IS a film you can watch OVER and OVER... and each time you feel like it was the first time you viewed it. AWESOME FILM!
I absolutely love this movie. The acting is superb. While the movie takes some thought to understand what's really going on - it is well worth it. This is the only movie that I watch from beginning to end without moving!
This is one of my MOST favorite films. I could watch it over and over and never tire from watching. Bagdad Cafe touches something deep inside of me, from the first time I saw it. Some movies you watch...others, you experience. Bagdad Cafe, for me, is an EXPERIENCE. So much so, it makes you want to visit Newberry Springs, CA where the Bagdad Cafe actually stands (where they shot the film) and you fully expect Brenda, Jasmin, Rudy, Sal, Phyllis... and the all the rest of the characters to be there. I love the southwest and this film captures the deep feelings I have. From the photography to the fun and sometimes haunting music - SEE THIS MOVIE. If you are totally bored or unaffected, I feel sorry for you. You REALLY missed something.
It's not the best movie I've ever seen in my whole life, but I love it. I saw it on cable, then watched it again, and again and then bought it. Told all my friends about it, who have now come over to watch it, who asked about it, and then bought it. Love the story. Jack Palance is wonderful, as usual as are the other characters. I would LOVE to see this become a stage play in Broadway. I'd go for sure. Get it, watch it. Worth it's weight in gold.
