Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Leave it to the British to knock off a gem like Northern Exposure and make it wholly their own, and every bit as marvelous to boot. Just as Northern Exposure revolved around fish-out-of-water Dr. Joel and tough local girl Maggie, the central relationship in Ballykissangel is that of Father Peter Clifford (Stephen Tompkinson) and Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwin). He’s the young English priest assigned to serve in a tiny Irish village, and she’s the local pub owner, classicly feisty and deeply opposed to all things religious. That the locals are colorful is no surprise; it’s in the blueprint. What makes the series work, though, are the wonderful character actors and sharp writing that balances humor and melodrama. Series 1 begins with Father Peter’s arrival, continues with his difficult adjustment period, and closes with his transfer to another parish -- which the locals manage to head off, naturally.
