Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The third year of the BBC’s charming Ballykissangel continues the show’s high standards and is known best to fans as the final run for Father Peter Clifford Stephen Tompkinson and Assumpta Fitzgerald Dervla Kirwan. Like Northern Exposure, Ballykissangel unfolds in a rural village populated by quirky characters who share an extremely strong sense of community. The 11 1998 episodes tie up plot threads left dangling in the previous series and end with a startling surprise. Father Clifford, the English priest assigned to the little Irish village in Series 1, remains at arm’s length yet emotionally entwined with pub owner Fitzgerald. The sexual tension between these two is palpable, and it comes to the fore in the episode titled "Lost Sheep," when Assumpta's new husband, Leo James Nesbitt, gives up on their marriage, in part because he suspects she cares for someone else. Other highlights include the season opener, "When a Child Is Born," in which Assumpta's employee Niamh Quigley Egan Tina Kellegher finally gives birth to the baby she had such trouble conceiving. "Changing Times" finds Niamh's entrepreneurial father, Brian Tony Doyle, angering the community by agreeing to let Korean developers bulldoze a local landmark. By far the most stunning episode of the season -- indeed, of the series -- is "The Reckoning," which presents the shocking death of a major character and augurs a complete change of direction for this exemplary show.

    Ballykissangel: Complete Series Three

All the "Ballykissangel" series are just amazing, but the third season has the most impact, especially for Assumpta and Peter fans. I wish all comedy/dramas were as good as "Ballykissangel".

    Phenomenal

I found the third season to be extremely heartfelt and powerful. I wish American comedy/drama was this good! I highly recommend this season, although needless to say it will have much more impact if you've seen the first two seasons.

Great Edition to the Ballykissangel legacy!

The thrid series of this wonderful BBC show is just as riveting and heart-felt as the first two. The stories and characters give this show its strength and a quality rarely known in American television. Although I am saddened to proclaim that this is the last season for Father Clifford and Assumpta Fitzgerald, two of my favorite characters. I definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys the beauty of Ireland and a love of good storytelling.
