Bambi

Overview

The classic Felix Salter story Bambi provides the basis for this near-perfect Disney animated feature. We follow the male deer Bambi from birth, through his early childhood experiences with woodland pals Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk, the traumatic sudden death of Bambi's mother at the hands of hunters, his courtship of the lovely doe Faline, and his rescue of his friends during a raging forest fire; we last see the mature, antlered Bambi assuming his proper place as the Prince of the Forest.

In the grand Disney tradition, Bambi is brimming with unforgettable sequences, notably the young deer's attempts to negotiate an iced-over pond, and most especially the death of Bambi's mother--and if this moment doesn't move you to tears, you're made of stone many subsequent Disney films, including Lion King, have tried, most in vain, to match the horror and pathos of this one scene. The score in Bambi yielded no hits along the lines of "Whistle While You Work," but the songs are adroitly integrated into the action. Bambi was the last of the "classic" early Disney features before the studio went into a decade-long doldrums of disjointed animated pastiches like Make Mine Music.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
More than 60 years before The Lion King, Walt Disney and his original dream team of animators illustrated the circle of life with this classic coming-of-age fable based on the book by Felix Salten. Bambi traces the seasons in the life of a young deer prince, from his birth and adolescence through the birth of his own two fawns. This masterpiece ranks near the top of the Disney pantheon. Bambi boasts some of Disney's most memorable characters (Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk), its loveliest songs ("Love Is a Song" and "Little April Showers"), and its most haunting and harrowing score -- listen to how the ominous Man's theme anticipates the incoming shark music from Jaws. It’s hard to imagine an animated scene that more effectively depicts joy and wonder than Bambi's first skittish skate on the frozen pond. There is heartbreak here, too, in Walt Disney’s first-ever death scene: "We'll tear [the audience’s] hearts out," the animator famously predicted. This two-disc set will leave Disney and animation buffs "twitterpated" with its wealth of archival rarities and unprecedented features. Chief among these is, in lieu of a commentary, audio reenactments of the actual story meetings that chart the film's production. Bambi is truly one for the ages, and this Special Edition will en-deer it to yet a new generation.
All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and its immediate descendants demonstrated that Walt Disney and his crew were masterful at handling elements of fantasy, melodrama, and comedy. Bambi, with the utterance of the single word "mother," proved that they could also create moments of heartrending emotion that left as indelible an impression as in any live-action film. Arguably the most beautiful of the early Disney films, Bambi features a palette of lush, gorgeous colors, and a number of unforgettable animated sequences, ranging from lighthearted (Bambi's attempts to walk upon a frozen lake) or strangely peaceful (the rainstorm) to suspenseful and thrilling (the incredible forest fire sequence). The character animation is also exemplary, from Thumper's chubby-cheeked cuteness and irrepressible brashness to Flower's adorable shyness. All of the characters are blessed with exceptionally fluid and realistic movement, and the animators also make good use of the multiplane camera throughout. Bambi's script is lean, with no excess fat upon it, and a simplicity that heightens the dramatic effect of the big moments. The score is a perfect match with the story, so much so that the songs tend not to draw attention to themselves, but "Little April Showers" is exceptionally charming. An enduring classic (and one which disturbs some young children), Bambi is one of the finest animated films ever made.

    okay

So there was really someone on the planet over the age of 15 that didn't know Bambi's mother got shot? If you think all the other Disney flicks condone and glorify matricide why didn't you preview? Like it or not, this is a Disney classic. Its light on story and plot but is blessedly short. My 3 year old loves to pick out all the different animals and make all the animal sounds. Yes, Bambi's mom gets killed, but I explained to my 3 year old that just like her very own Grandma, Bambi's mommy went to heaven.

    Birth, Life & Death

I remember listening and reading along with the Bambi LP-record & book when I was child. And how my imagination took hold of the sounds, and images of the book (never saw the movie prior). Now for my own children, and in all it's glory, a digitally enhanced version of a story that I loved as a child! The metaphors, if not parallels, to life, and the real world are endlessly and vividly captured in this epic, and when Disney animation was at it's finest. I'm also warmed to see that my own children enjoy it as much as I did, and looking forward to their children enjoying it as well. Interestingly enough, as a parent, I've long since come to understand just what the ending of the movie symbolizes.

    What is wrong with Disney???

Why is it that every Disney cartoon I see, seems to condone matricide? This story was horrible. My 3year old cried and cried when we realize that Bambis mother was shot. This movie was marketed as a feel good childrens story, and frankly I don't see it. If you don't want to answer questions about death from a child, don't buy this. I know I wasn't ready.

My second favorite movie of all times.

This movie has everything in it that any movie lover could ever want. It has action, romance, moral lessons, and death. the animation in the movie was unmatched until Titan A.E. was released. The only movie I like better than this is Life as a House. Cause I like metaphors in titles.

Really Cute, good length for kids:)

I think that this movie is great for kids because of all of the cute animals and adventure. Plus, it is on the short side so little ones won't get bored! Another thing is that adults can appreciate the themes and emotions that occur in this movie. So really, it is great for the whole family!

This Teaches Children- Hard times can be overcome with the help of loyal friends.

Hard times will happen to us all. It's not if, but when. This movie shows children that hard times can happen through no fault of our own and that they can be over come. Some lessons in this movie are- to honor the value of friendship, team work and loyalty. In a world where people isolate and forget the value of friendship, this is a good reminder that friendship comes in all sizes, shapes and forms. Even the smallest and humblest of friends can help us feel better in a big way. Good job Disney!
