Overview

A self-made millionaire living in Boston's posh Beacon Hill area, Thomas Banacek George Peppard is a freelance insurance investigator with a taste for only the finest things. To finance the high life, Banacek takes on the most difficult property-loss cases, which allows him to charge double the standard rate for his services. As in the case of car owners whose last resort is to bring a malfunctioning car to the dealer, the Banacek shtick requires that the insurance companies call on him to recover lost or stolen insured items only when all else has failed. But Banacek's the best; a virtual one-man A-Team. The suave sleuth is aided in his efforts by his limousine driver and gofer, Jay Ralph Manza, and he relies heavily on his close friend and bibliophile/bookstore owner Felix Mulholland Murray Matheson to help in background research. A cog in the wheel of NBC's Wednesday Mystery Movie series -- along with Madigan starring Richard Widmark and Cool Million James Farentino -- Banacek aired eight 90-minute productions in this first season 1971-72, all of which are included in this two-disc set.

    Banacek series still holds up

I bought this dvd for the memories - my dad and I used to watch the Sunday Mystery Movie on NBC every week. Our favorite episodes were Columbo and Banacek. I was surprised on watching the 16 episodes how well the series held up. With the exception of one or two episodes, the sense of mystery is still there, the writing is tight and fun and the characters are enjoyable. Peppard plays his role with a devilish sense of humor and while Murray Matheson is wasted in his role as Felix Mulholland, he brightens the screen every time he appears. This series is still fun and exciting though probably not for anyone born after the Moon landing...

Very happy that I got this!

I used to watch Banacek when it was originally shown, and got back into it again while watching on RTN in DC. Decided to treat myself and get the full series. And I'm not disappointed! For anyone that's into Banacek, you should treat yourself and get the full series as well.

    Banacek, another James Bond type

If you love egotists you'll love Banacek. Women swoon over him and like James Bond, hasn't much time for them, but does make them feel loved.
He always solves the problem and it will get you guessing till the end.
After you've seen a few, you might even guess right!
Sort of Pirot that is handsome and loves the ladies.
